keeping barrels
« on: November 25, 2010, 01:00:29 AM »
My father-in-law collected contenders and barrels. I'm trying to decide what to keep.
22 rimfire 10"
22 hornet 10"
22 K-hornet 14"
223 14"
6mm tcu  custom 14"
6.5 tcu 14"
7x30 water 14"
7mm tcu 10"
30 herret 10"
30 herret 14"
30-30 14"
30x39 14"
357 max 14"
35 Rem 14"
357 herret 14"
375 win 14"
44 mag 14"
45-70 16" and 14"
I'm thinking 22k-hornet, 7x30 water, 30 herret,30x39, 357 max, and maybe 375 win. I know most would say keep them all, but there is family involved. What would you pick there are several frames, grips etc. I'd like to convert a couple to rifles, they are more likely to be hunted with.
Thanks.

Wow, he had a nice well rounded collection with most of the "classic" Contender chamberings represented.  Yeah, I'd have to keep them all.  Somehow I never seem to part with barrels, just acquire more.  There are so many angles from which to come at this problem!  You can think about possible uses for hunting, or just calibers you may want to "tinker" with at the range.  Barrel length is another aspect as I see he had both 10 and 14 in 30 Herrett.  Personally I am partial to the short tubes, but will go with 14er's if the caliber justifies it like in the 7-30 Waters or 375 win.

One thought, if you have plenty of already formed brass for the 357 Herrett you might think of keeping it instead of the Max.  My 357 Herrett is one of my favorites (at 10") and the one I take deer/hog hunting if the likely range doesn't dictate my 7-30 Waters instead.  I think the Herrett beats the Max by a couple hundred fps.  The thing the Max has going for it though is the straight wall case for ease of reloading and the requirement for same in some states for hunting.

Also, I have more barrels in 22rf than any other single caliber and they are loads of fun and very accurate.  You might think about keeping that one.  You seem to be headed in the right direction though, so I'll not upset your apple cart any further.  Good luck!
