Contender information
« on: November 20, 2010, 03:42:09 PM »
Ok, I'm pretty new to contenders and was hoping some of you guys could help me out with a little info as I plan to build my arsenal...

My biggest question is about forends.  Can somebody list the differences in the mount hole spacing between the different length barrels?  I'll probably have a few more questions, but this would be a great start.

Thanks,
Anonym

Carbine forend has two screws but different spacing from super 14 which also has two screws.

Ten inch barrel forends have one screw and of course the octagon barrel forend won't fit on a bull barrel for obvious reasons even though the screw is in the right place.  Same with different contour carbine forends (bull vs. tapered barrel).

What I didn't know until lately is that the ten inch 45/410 vented rib barrel I recently purchased takes yet another forend that has a single screw but in a slightly different location.  Luckily I already had one.  Just goes to show that even if you've messed with Contenders for near 25 years like I have, there are still surprises.

Edited the above;  I was trying to put an octagon forend on that 45/410 (DOH!!).  The hole in the octagon forend is in a different place though which I hadn't realized before.  I stand by my statement that there is always more to learn about these thngs. ;)
Lord, please help me to be half the man my dogs think I am.

Excellent.  Thanks for the info!

Next question...  The Contender I picked up has a 16.25" TC Custom Shop 22WMRF barrel with it.  From what I can tell, the custom shop just offered options of lengths and finishes, right?  This one is a standard matte stainless finish with an 11-degree target crown.  Would the cut and recrown be all that's different?  Or is there something else that adds value to these Custom Shop barrels?

Custom shop barrels are usually barrels that are not a standard caliber, length, taper or finish.

more labor intensive  built one at a time to order. some times but not always a higher grade barrel blank is used. T/C builts their own barrels from solid steel rod, most after market builders buy someone elses barrels and do the finish work.
