Barrel won't open
« on: October 30, 2010, 07:54:28 AM »
Guys- I've seen this topic before but can't find it now that I need it.  My 6.5JDJ barrel won't open on my stainless frame SN S27296.  This frame has always been a little sticky but I've always been able to get it open.  What do I do now that it won't open?  I tried pulling the pin but that didn't work.  I put the pin back.  Any ideas here?  Thanks.

I'd had this happen with one custom barrel. With the pin pulled I held the barrel in one hand and pulled sharply on the on the trigger guard and it opened. I had to pull with some force to open, just don't pull so hard as to break the spur off. You may have to hone the locking lug.

Had a similar problem with mine in both 223 and 30-30.  Turns out it is very primer sensitive, and soft primers tend to flow back, making it almost impossible to open.  I ended up pushing the open lever against the wood bench rest, hard, until it opened.  When you get it open, check the primers.  If they appear raised, or have "swipe" marks on them, try a different primer, such as CCI, which tend to be on the hard side.  My 30-30 barrel did this with factory Winchester ammo, but not Remington, or hand loads with CCI primers.

You may have already solved this, but I'll throw out a possibility. Depending on its age and use, you could have a firing pin stuck forward. It seizes the primer and makes for a tough time getting one open. Firing pins do break and the small springs can lose their temper.

Greetings.
I busted an upper firing pin and it would open, but only part way. T/C actually tells you to rap the trigger spur with a soft hammer. It works, but is still a scary thing to do.

You can remove the trigger assembly and carefully pry the locking lug back. If that doesn't open it, then something may be jammed in the breech.

It is odd it didn't open with the pin out. That allows the barrel assembly to come forward and release the lug or whatever is holding it.

Good luck, P.A.

P.A. Myers is correct...

I have had to do this several times with a 22LR Match that I had nothing but problems with until I solved the problem--'nuff said on that...

You must look at the looking bolts after you remove the trigger assembly and "pry" them easily with a screwdriver.  It is tricky until you get the hang of it.  But it will release the barrel and let you proceed with whatever might be necessary...

Welcome to T/C.  Many will tell you they have one hundred barrels and twenty-two frames and have never had a problem. You and I must be unlucky!!!...

And so it goes...

Good-luck...BCB
