Finishing Boyd's camo laminate
« on: November 01, 2010, 02:07:22 PM »
Would appreciate any tips on finishing a new Boyd's thumbhole camo laminate stock I bought for my 35 Whelen.  I know several here have bought them when they were selling thier seconds.  I did read the FAQ's and there is some info but sorta limited.

Saw the poly finish post but am more interested in an oil finish and whether it is necessary to fill the grain on these laminate stocks.  Any input is appreciated.

Thanks, Ken

Birchwood Casey Tru Oil,, too easy,, just follow instructions. You can keep adding layers till your happy, if you don't like the Tru-Oil finish you can sand it down and it becomes a good base coat.

You can pick it up at just about any sporting goods store, Heck the local Wally has it.

There are 100's of ways to finish a gun stock, Polyurathane in my opinion is absolutley the worst!

Linseed oil,
Boiled Linseed oil,
Tung oil,
Permalyn is a darn good sealer and finish

Those are nice stocks, I have my eye out, and some day I'd like to have one,, But it's not a $400 piece of Hard Curly Maple
found elsewhere

Several coats of Tru oil, followed with 0-0-0-0 (4 ought) steel wool between coats, scuff off the gloss. You can build it up a thick as you wish. It works out fine. 26-t

Thanks for the response guys.  I have used the Tru Oil before and had good results on walnuut just wondered if someone might be using another product on the laminate.

Did you use the poly that is specified for interior or exterior use?

It is Minwax indoor/outdoor Helmsman spar urethane in a 11.5 oz spray can that I got at Wally World. So far Hoppe#9 has not ate it up . Tung oil don't like solvents,so be careful with it. 26-t

+1 on the Minwax Helmsman.  I've used it on several laminated stocks, the matte finish, by the way, and had good results with it.  I hang it and spray it, then knock down the lumps and bumps and runs, let it cure, and shoot another coat if needed, till I'm happy with it. Maybe one of these days, I'll get a proper regulator and good gun and room to shoot finish, but rattle cans do me for now.
I told my pap and mam I was going to be a mountain man; acted like they was gut-shot. "Make your life go here, son. Here's where the people is. Them mountains is for Indians and wild men." "Mother Gue", I says "the Rocky Mountains is the marrow of the world," and by God, I was right. Keep your nose in the wind and your eye along the skyline
