Altering barrel marking
« on: November 03, 2010, 06:14:15 PM »
What are your thoughts on re-marking my 357 Mag barrel that I reamed to 357 Max ?  I can't imagine selling the barrel, but it's the sort of thing that should outlive me and probably my kids.

The barrel marking is "357 MAG". If I do it, could I just have the "g" in Mag x'ed out and add another "x" at the end ?

Does whacking on a chamber to remark it change the chamber's dimensions enough to matter? I tried to do this and it took so much force with the hammer that I stopped.

" I tried to do this and it took so much force with the hammer "

It depends on the stamp set, A full set from the local BarginLumber store for 9.99 might not be hardened enough for the steel barrel, Where as a high end $100 set would do the job with just a firm hammer blow,,  ???

I had the choke opened, (actually just to get it honed round and straight), on a 12ga Pardner barrel and simply stamped the side of the underlug "Imp Cyl",,I figgure if anyone get's it in the future they'll see that and get the idea,, ;)

Until you are sure of what to do and how, just put a 'hang tag' on it between uses in case something happens to you. In this case it wouldnt be so bad for an uninformed user, they would shoot the std .357Mags with no problems.
