OT - clear2target
« on: November 10, 2010, 01:37:06 AM »
Tim,

If this should be someplace else please move it.

Has anyone tried GBO Site Advertiser "Clear2Target" product that allows us old folks to shoot iron sights?  Would appreciate input from folks that have used the product with handguns or rifles.

thanks

If the "clear2target" is the little round thing you put on your glasses, I knew several of the "Mature" shooters used them when we were at the rendezvous for all open sight shooting, and said it gave a very good clear sight picture. Sorry I have not used them myself but several of the top shooters used them and some of the younger crowd kind of wanted to ban them from competition, claiming it gave an advantage. So I would have to say they are good. That was ten years ago, but they look like the same thing- just a little sequin looking thing that stuck on your glasses lens.
Hope this helps answer your question.  thejanitor

I have complicated lenses in my glasses, near/far sighted plus double vision. The front sight picture has plagued me for a long time, never quite clear enough unless I tilted my head way back in an unnatural position for aiming. This product came up on our vendor ads and I gave it a try...my shooting has improved dramatically. Just stick the clingon on the lens of your prescription glasses and it makes your eye focus more and the front sight becomes very clear, distance to target is a little blurry but that is ok.  At 25 yds. I am feeling confident enought to try my pistol on deer during our gun season!  I believe there are 9 reusable clingons in a pack.

I picked up a thing called the "Merit Optical Device" several years back that sounds like what you've described. It's basically a "peep sight" with a little internal camera-like shutter opening deal that opens and closes just like a camera lens. It's attached to a suction cup that attaches to your glasses. Positioned properly, is allows you to focus on the front and rear sights as well as the target, something many of us can no longer do with our old eyes.

I haven't used it in a long time as I haven't shot my iron sighted Marlin .44 Mag. lever gun recently. All I can say is, it worked for me just fine.

I think Midway sells them now if you look for them in the "sights" section.

Hven't used them or the Merit disc myself but the science behind them IS valid. It's about allowing a small amount of light into a focal point. It works.
You can do the same thing by simply rolling your index finger in a small circle and looking through that small hole held close to your eye.
For the cost of these it's worth a try, the Merit disc I beleive goes for over a 100 nowadays.

And as Janitor said they crop up from time to time at a Rendezvous and cause quit a stir,,it's supposed to be a primitive shoot. Problem is they improve vison over open sights for everyone that uses them, not just the older guys. So if 1 guy uses them it is an unfair advantage. Older guys argue if they don't use one they can't see well enough.
It can cause hard feelings, but the reality is everyone reaches a point in any compition where the younger ones are just better, when that happens either settle for 2nd or 3rd or step down gracefully.

These being offered here I think are the same ones that are in a jar at the range I shoot at.  The science is good, exactly the same as a pin hole camera, it is proven to work.  The way it works is that it works is that all the light your eye sees goes through a small hole, so both the sight and target is in focus, the down side is that it limits the amount of light to your eye, so it is good in bright light but not so good if the sun isn't out.  It it good science, same exactly as a peep sight.   Larry

Thanks for the information, I will place an order shortly.  I just want to try these with my handguns as I have already given up on rifles & iron sights, nothing but scopes for me.

You may be suprised, your iron sight rifles may get to come off the shelf if they work like it sounds like they do. The price isn't so bad. Please post after you get them and just let us know if they did the trick.

I purchased 2 packs of them...and they work! I have progressive lens bifocals. I put it on my lense, and picked up a ruger model  44 carbine that I don't have a scope on and the front and rear sight were clear. I have not been able to see open sights in years. I called gbo's sponsor and told him I pre tried it with a piece of electrical tape with a hole punched in it, and that worked as well. He said that idea was where he started.

For old eyes like mine... they cleared the sights right up. They stick on your lense and you can easily move them around to find the sweet spot.

Try em...they worked for me...
