I've never used them, but recoil has never been a big issue with me, and I shoot a Handi .45-70 pushing a Rem 405 to 2000 fps.  All I know about them is what Remington says.  They claim they kill as well as a standard load.  I have a grandson who's a lot bigger than I am, but is a recoil whimp.  He uses my 7mm-08 Handi, and he's fine with 140 gr. factory loads.  If I didn't reload, I'd use a standard factory load with a lighter bullet.  Lets say a 120 instead of a 170.

I think I'd prefer to use a slower, fatter bullet and get a clean kill with less recoil.  For example, my .357 Max, .445 Supermag and .38.55 loaded to 1500 fps, or there abouts, will kill well and not punish you.  I shoot all three a lot faster than that and I don't notice the recoil.

A good buddy, who is not a reloader and does not want to be, uses the 125 grain 30-06 load with his kids for a hunting load in the Handi and a chopped-short 03A3 and they love it, he says it kicks like a 243/30-30, but I have pulled the trigger on one of those rounds, but his 12 year old does regularly.

A 405  gr bullet out of the barrel at 2000 fps is going to hurt the guy behind the rifle 'less that rifle weighs about 20 lb.

There is a recoil calculator available On-line, simple to use give it a try to see what sort of energy you need to absorb.

It's a hunting load....not a target load.  A member here is extremely pleased with the accuracy and effectiveness of the load, and his son took a nice deer last week with it.  DRT.  It shoots 1 - 1.5 inches at 100 yards out of both our Handis.  It's his son's favorite rifle and favorite load.....as it is mine.  I need to mention, I weigh less than 150 lbs., and believe "felt recoil" is about 30 percent muzzle blast, 30 percent in your head and 40 percent real.  No you can't shoot it all day off the bench.  I have lighter loads running about 1500 for that.

Pete  :)
Your 150 lb live weight is probably the answer. You get bend easier and give less resistance then a heavier guy. :D

We used the Remington managed recoil load in the Handi 270 my son used last 2 years.  Didn't have to do any adjustments for the scope at 100 (maybe 1/2 inch difference).  This year he's shooting full load core-lokts w/ no flinch, so it did its job as intended.  Now I have 1/2 a box for when my 8 year old turns 12 for his first hunt and the Handi moves down to him (if his brother doesn't raise a stink to keep it).  I don't hand load, so I was happy to find these on the market.
