Hog Huntin Report
« on: October 25, 2010, 04:02:43 AM »
Put out bait corn and some small red lights Friday evening then went back about 3am Saturday morning.  Nothing had touched the corn so I thought I'd picked my time well.  Sat in the tripod from 3am till 7:30am and all I saw were coons.  Did hear some hogs off in the distance around 6ish but they never got very close.  Was back over there a 3am Sunday morning and found most of the corn was gone.  Laid out some more corn then climbed in the tripod.  Around 3:30 the coyotes became really active for about an hour, running up and down the bayou about 300 yards away, but now if them came close to where I was.  Coyotes are also a target in my control hunting if I they give me a chance.  They have been pretty hard on small pets in the neighborhood I'm hunting.  Sometime around 5am I heard the sound of grunting and could tell it was a lone hog and it was coming closer.  Lone hogs generally means older boar and this was the case here.  He was pretty big, but he wouldn't come into the lights so I could get a good look at him or a shot.  Guess you don't get old and big by being dumb.  Normally I wouldn't shoot a big boar as they aren't very good eatin, but because this was more about hog control than putting meat on the table if he would have given me the chance, I would have put an arrow in him.

Oh well, might try again Thursday evening before heading back up for some deer hunting on Friday.

Thanks for the report AHK. Sounds like you had a few exciting moments, hang in there and keep us posted. I'm rooting (pun intended) for you to get one of them hogs and/or the coyotes.

GOOD SHOOTING!
