First deer with a longbow
« on: October 16, 2010, 03:56:56 PM »
I've been hunting with a recurve for several years and have taken at least one deer per season since I started with traditional equipment. I got a pretty nice 7-pointer the first week of our season with my Black Widow recurve, so then I decided I would try to get one with my longbow.
I took my climbing stand to a spot with three white oaks at the edge of a laurel thicket and was settled in before daylight. About 9 o'clock I had four does slip out of the laurels to my right, I had to standup and turn around in my old faithful Loggy Bayou to get in position for a shot. The deer were completely unaware of my presence and totaly calm, at first I thought they were to far for a good shot then I judged the yardage and double checked by picking 20 and adding to it (something from my OLD compound 3-D days). I knew the big lone doe was right at 30 yards and I knew that my Martin Venom longbow was point on at 30 yards with the CX Heritage 150 tipped with a 180 grain Grizzly broadhead. I slowly came to fulldraw and anchored, put the point of my shaft on the 10 ring and the arrow was on it's way. The arrow hit about the top of the 10 ring and came out low 8. The doe made it about 60 yards and piled up. I gave thanks to the Lord for letting me harvest another deer to feed my family and then the work began. We had venison chili for supper tonight! ;)
I love traditional archery and shoot year round almost every day. I have always just grabbed the recurve for hunting but now the Venom longbow may change that!

Sounds like you had a great hunt, I'm still at zero for deer taken with my trad gear and tomorrow is the last day of our archery only season.

Thumbs Up to ya Slufoot:

I gave up on bowhunting 40 years ago.  I liked practicing on paper, but never developed the skill in real life situations like you described.

Great deer! I too have yet to take one with my traditional bow, but I've got until  Jan. 15, 2011, so maybe I can get one. Got so much work to do, its hard getting time to go these days. :-\

Thanks guys!

Hey Cottonwood, I should have checked this yesterday and wished you luck for your last day. Hope you got one today!

JonD., Hang in there and put some of that work off till after bow season, that's what I do. ;D I guarantee, it (the work) will still be there when hunting season is over. Good luck to you with your traditional equipment and may your arrow fly true!

GOOD SHOOTING!

Sounds like you had a great hunt, and congrats on your kill.  Hope my year turns around and I can do the same with my new longbow.

Slufoot, I was going to head into general season with a rifle, but have decided to press on with the bow.  We have to give a week of silence so to speak between, so no hunting this week.

Congrats on the Longbow success!   I got lucky with my rifle on opening weekend in Georgia (two) so now I will get back to the rest of the season with my Martin Savannah, and 200gr Grizzly heads.   I hope to be able to share a success story like you have.

Thanks again folks!
You all ain't gonna believe this but I went to a different spot this morning with my Martin, Venom longbow. I got my Loggy Bayou up a maple tree well before daylight at the edge of another laurel thicket, I guess by now you have figured out that I like hunting around the thickets! :) By 9am the only thing I had seen was a few squirrels, then a few minutes later I caught some movement straight in front of me about 80 yards away. It was a doe and she was headed straight for me, she got about 20 yards from me and stopped behind a small clump of dogwoods. I could barely see her much less get a shot, then she turned around and walked straight away and then turned and went up in the pines to my right. She stopped about 60 yards away and then turned and headed straight for me, she was on a line to pass about 15 yards in front of me. She was walking at a good pace and never stopped, when her head went behind the clump of dogwoods at 15 yards I drew my bow. When she came out the other side she turned slightly and was coming even closer, I said to myself in my mind, "Pick a spot, Pick a spot, Pick a spot", BAM! The Grizzly broadhead took out both lungs from about 10 yards, I didn't see the deer fall but I heard her crash.
I didn't get any pictures of this one, my wife was home Saturday and took the Pic of my first Longbow deer. I've got to get me one of those small digital cameras to take with me when I'm hunting.

Slufoot, make sure when you do that it has a timer, so you can set it on something and get in the picture with your kills.

Congrats on the longbow kill! I shoot longbows much of the summer but always grab the Silvertip at go time. I was going to hunt with my longbow but picked the recurve up mid Sept, maybe next year  :)

Slufoot, I was going to head into general season with a rifle, but have decided to press on with the bow.
Cottonwood I like your style, I've been thinking about taking my long bow during firearms season and sticking my 10" 357 Maximum Contender pistol in my backpack just incase I see a nice one that doesn't want to cooperate.
Also thanks for the great tip on the camera with a timer, I'll be sure to get one like that.

Congrats on the Longbow success!   I got lucky with my rifle on opening weekend in Georgia (two) so now I will get back to the rest of the season with my Martin Savannah, and 200gr Grizzly heads.   I hope to be able to share a success story like you have.
Congrats on your double, that's something not many folks can say they've done. I had a Martin Savannah for a little while. I got it used and it was a great looking and good shooting bow but the poundage was too much for my liking, so I sold it. If it had been a lighter poundage I would have kept it. I love those Grizzly broadheads also!

GOOD SHOOTING!

Slufoot you can even get a camera mount that attaches to an arrow.

Works like a monopod, so being compact for easy carry.

All Hawks you Kill me! ;D I got a big chuckle out of that, thanks for the laugh.
This has been my best bow season with traditional equipment, the good Lord has blessed me this year.
