A few question please
« on: October 22, 2010, 04:43:17 PM »
I have to admit that the title of this forum is confusing so if this post should be somewhere else, please move it.

Question #1  You have been hunting with an Inline loaded with pellet powder and a sabot bullet, at the end of the day not having shot the rifle, What do you do with this loaded firearm?

Question#2 The same scenario as above however you now have loose powder and a non sabot style bullet. Does that make a difference.

Question#3 ATF doesn't consider ML as Firearms, is this true? If so do you need a back ground check at the dealer or some other form of ID.

Question # 4 If an ML is bought at a gun show or from a private person, is there a back ground check or some other ID required. As in a cash deal.

1&2 where I am it's illegal to put a loaded firearm in a vehicle which includes a ML.
#1 I unscrew the breach plug and push the pellets and sabot out.
#2 before leaving the woods I discharge my Hawkin into a safe back stop.
#3/4 There is no back ground check.

Same here in Virginia, USA.

1&2 - I leave mine loaded until the end of the season, of course they are loaded after each shot!  :P
3 - Better check on that one. I have heard that some dealers do require a back ground check on MZs.
As far as the ATF is concerened, I have heard both ways as to if it is a firearm or not.
4 - Again, some dealers do require it, a private person may ask for an ID but it's not required here in VA.

If in doubt, check with your local gun shop, they will know for sure on #s 3&4.

Longtom:

How long would you trust the powder/pellets to be good if kept in the barrel?

It's no big deal to unload it. It takes less than 2 minutes. I'd rather obey the law then wind up getting my rifle confiscated.

In Michigan here, it's legally unloaded when decapped.  You can leave a load in your barrel for quite a while, even like 2 weeks+ depending on ambient conditions and humidity primarily.  I don't do it for more than 2-3 days though.  CVA makes a Moisture buster plug for the end of barrels that is supposed to keep moisture out of that end and if you take a rubber grease zirk cap and stick it over your nipple, that'll improve the timeframe also.  If you don't want to buy the bore plug for the muzzle end, you can also put a piece of black electrical tape over it or a rain "condom".  ;)

The rust plug is about 1/2 way down this page: http://www.cva.com/cleaning.php

Thanks all for the replies,  I understand the loaded or unloaded status varies by State. I can live with that.

Traditions sells/sold a CO2 cartridge powered handgun-like thingy which I use to blow out the charge.  It fits over the nipple.  Pull the trigger on the thingy and with a big POOF out comes bullet & charge.  Out they come, I must add from TVOE, with enough velocity to blow the bullet through a thin plastic trash can.

The thingy is also good for checking nipple blockage, etc.  Point the gun at a leaf on the ground and pull the trigger on the thingy.  If it blows away the leaf, your nipple & barrel are clear.

As far as the ml no thaving to be registered. As of right now, a ml that can not be converted to a modern gun such as an encore,  has to be registered. if it is a dedicated ml such as an omega or any other type, it does not have to be registered.  You can walk in to a store buy one and leave no questions asked.

Bubba ref. the first part of your post I think you meant to say that a muzzleloader that "can" be converted to a modern firearm (i.e. T.C. Encore , Knight KP1) has to be registered.
