Stuck Breech Plug
« on: October 07, 2010, 10:03:47 AM »
A friend has a Ruger 77/50 with a stuck breech plug.
No charge to contend with.
Suggestions for removal?

I'd probably pour some breakfree down the barrel or wd-40 etc.  Let it sit overnight, so there's time for some to work down in the threads.  Just shove a piece of rubber or cork into the primer pocket too keep it from drizzling out.  The next day, flip it over and spray some breakfree on the other side around the flange of the breechplug.  On day 3, get ahold of an impact (not air impact) ratchet, the kind you hammer on and chuck up a socket sized for the plug.  Make sure it's the right size, then give it a couple wacks with that.  Should loosen and free up after that.  8)  If it doesn't, give it a couple days each side maybe for deeper penetration.  ;)

If you don't have a hex style plug, Just put an aluminum or brass rod against it and rap it a couple times with a light hammer.  You don't want to peen it or shatter it, then try the wrench again.  Sorry I forget not all are hexes.  8)

Seems all to common. After season take it out & leave it with the gun in a baggie, all cleaned up.

Yah, or slather it good with anti-seize breech plug grease.  I don't let mine sit too often though for more than a couple monthss without playing around with it some.  8)  Keeps my loading rhythm smooth too.  ;)

As a last resort you can apply a little heat right over the breech plug area and give the wrench/socket a good pop

Just to update ya'll.
My friend soaked the breech plug from the breech end with Kroil for a day and with a little help the breech plug came out.
Lesson learned.
Thanks for the help.

Put some Kroil on it and let it sit overnight. It should come right out.

wrap teflon tape on the threads before installing it.
