Short at last .44
« on: November 04, 2010, 10:49:50 PM »
I finally got around to shortening my .44 mag barrel to 18 inches. I was going to go to 16, but may have run foul of local overall length 750mm (about 30 inch) legal requirements if I fitted a short butt for grandkids in the future. It is amazing that 4inches of barrel removed makes so much difference in the handling. I hadn't handled a shorty before. I am glad that I was inspired by the Shorties I have seen on this forum. A test firing at 25 metres was great, with the group size shrinking till my fourth 3 shot group was all touching.

That's great Slim, you're gonna love it.  Tim blew my .44 Mag out to .445.  He also did my 18 inch .38-55.  I love the way both my shortie .357 Maxi and the .38-55 handle.  I'm going to take the .445 down to at most 18 inches.  If you think about it, they're pistol calibers, and the barrels are still 3 times longer than a handgun.....almost forgot.....am I allowed to email the word "handgun" to Australia? ::) ::)  Good luck, and go ding a dingo for me....I'll do a coyote for you.  I wish I were down under, winter is coming on quickly here and you guys are starting Summer.  We had our first sticking snow last evening.  It's good though, it makes it easier to see what the deer are doing.

Good luck, good shooting, and good Hunting

Pete

Handguns are fine, if your willing to jump over all the hurdles to legal ownership, but I cant ding a dingo  (endangered species). I'll try to pot a pig! Something doesn't add up with the Shorty. It feels to have lost more weight than the 4 inch piece of barrel weighs! Keep warm.  Pete

I forgot to mention, I've got my shorties, and I include my standard .45LC carbine in that, all on BC Carbine stocks.  They really help with quick and light handling.

When did the dingo go endangered?  Last year I was talking to an Aussie that took quite a few?...Is it just a regional thing as wolves are in this country and Canada.  They're fair game in Alaska and Canada, and protected in the lower 48.  I don't think you've got them.....be glad the early settlers forgot them.  They remembered to bring "Tally Ho the fox" as they did here.  I've got wolves coming out my ears and I can't do a thing about them.  If they attack my livestock, they're dead and we'll deal with Department of Natural Resources later.

I wanted to ask, can you hunt your big Buffs, and what rifle would you use?  He looks like a nasty critter.

I would guess the apparent loss of extra weight is due to the better ballance of shorties.

Definitely a balance thing. I would like to try 16-17 inch length if not for legals. Regional thing I think on the dingo. If its attacking lambs its a feral dog and attracts lead poisoning.- Pete
