308, 150g Accubond and SST?
« on: September 16, 2010, 01:46:40 PM »
I have been happily using the 165g Gameking BTSP in various 308s for years.
I have an extremely accurate load worked up in my 308 but I am just the kind of guy that likes to experiment.

I got some SSTs and Accubonds in that I am starting to work up loads for

Just looking for feedback from users here on actual field use...
thanks in advance

I picked up quite a few of the SST's a couple of years ago from Lock Stock and Barrel which were sold as blems. I got 500 each of several calibers, figuring to use them up for trigger time and hog hunting.

Since then, I have found that they all shot VERY well in my ,270, 308, and a couple different 7mm calibers.

As for as the .308 loads went, I honestly cannot say just how small a group they would shoot, as I played with several loads, mainly looking for minute of hog accuracy, of around 1-1.5" at 100yds. Being that we shot so many rounds I was simply looking for something cheap to shoot, which would have enough punch to readily drop the hogs within our usual 100yd or less ranges.

The 150 SST's worked wonderfully at loads ranging from around 2000fps up through around 2650fps. Granted these aren't blistering velocities, but they are good for the short 16.5" barrel I have on that rifle. What I was more pleased with was the knockdown I got from them, usually being a one shot ordeal. Granted there are always those which will soak up the first shot like it was nothing, but for the most part the SST's were on par with the factory loads I used in anchoring them on the spot.

Damage was also very acceptable, meaning that if you did hit heavy shoulder bone yes they might make a bit of a mess, but overall  they were no worse than the other standard cup and core bullets I had used.

For deer, I haven't used the .308-150, but have the 277-130gr stoked up to just over 3000fps at the muzzle. With these I did notice a bit more damage to the surrounding area of impact. However it was nothing I would call objectionable. They really worked well for the task I loaded them for which was ranges in the 2-300yrd area.  While I haven't had but one chance on a deer in this area and I passed, I have taken several hogs with them. They hit like a sledge hammer and simply knock them off their feet. Again similar damage to anything else I have used, and by no means objectionable. They are a bit rough on the closer shots however of around 30 - 75yds, which is to be expected when driving this type bullet at those velocities.

I don't think you will be overly disappointed in them at all. I have worked up accuracy loads of 1/2" or less with the .270 and 7mm ones, just not the .308's. There are just some things that do not require that type of precision. Shooting hogs on the run offhand, through the tangles and brush of a river bottom isn't one of them.

Good luck with yours, and have a great hunting season.

41mag,

Appreciate the detailed feedback sir, good info
my only real concern with the SSTs that they may be a little too explosive
Seen what the 165 AMAX does from a friend's gun on a doe cull, but I realize the SSTs have thicker jackets
I am in Texas and do a lot of hog hunting, though most of the time I use a 6.8 AR with 95g Barnes TTSX

When I got home yesterday there was 3 boxes of Accubonds
They are longer than the SST and the 165 Gameking BTSP, should make for a very slippery bullet at extended ranges and fly flat

As for velocity, I am running a 20" LTR right now, I haven't got to chrono the 150 loads yet, but suffice it to say they won't be screaming fast, I would like to be able to get the 2800 but not if I have to run on the ragged edge of load data.  2700 Shouldn't be any problem, maybe 2750
Oh well, deer or hogs can't tell the difference but I also don't take real close shots to really stress the bullet, if it's close, out comes the 44 sixgun.

My goal is to have a reliable 400 yard load that is very, very accurate and deadly
The load I have with the 165g Gameking holds and honest 1" at 300 yards and flat out works on deer at that distance..  When it comes to hunting time, I may not even go with a different load, just wanting to experiment preseason.. and I have some 175 Berger hunting VLDs coming too.

take care and thanks again for the detailed response

I've had great luck in the past with accubonds but not so good of luck with the sst's. That was with my 280 and a 7mm rum I had. ( I kinda kick myself for getting rid of the 280) I haven't try'd either in my 308 yet but I have try'd the 168 vld's and am extrememly happy with the results and they are priced right smack in the middle between the accubond's and the sst's. I haven't put one through any game yet , which I hope to change next month. They do shoot damn good berger makes a top of the line bullet for sure.

I use the 165g Accubond, not the 150g, in my .308 and it loves them.  Devastating on deer and I'm sure it'll do the trick on any hog also.
