Was going to buy a .44 mag tomorrow 9/28. Mistake?
« on: September 28, 2010, 05:02:52 PM »
Before making the purchase I did a search and found that there have been beaucoup problems reported with the .44 mag being over sized dating back to 2006. Is this still an issue?
Thanks in advance. You guys might be saving me a bunch of grief!

Nope, late 2006/2007 and later Marlin made barrels are fine, they have .429"-430" bores compared to .432"-.433" for older barrels.

Thanks for the quick response!
I started buying H&Rs last year. I now own. 2 45-70 BCs, 1 45LC BC, 2 .444 Marlins. The .44 mag will be number 6. Last year we shot five deer during the "primitive weapons season" here in Louisiana with these rifles. They're all great. ;D
Best regards to all.

sounds like you have been bit by the handi virus....

you better get that 44 and a 357... then you will feel better for a short time... ;)

as far as the 44... it is a great shooting gun.

I hate to be a wet blanket, but the new ones are on SB1 frames and will only handle shotgun barrels and the .357.  The maxi is marginal and the .445 is out.  Personally, I'd get a SB2 frame and build it myself, and then be free to add whatever bites you at the moment.

Now that I think about it, I have two SB2 frames and 3 stock sets lanquishing for lack of barrels.....I need to correct that problem. ::)

mtcur3,

Why the 44 Mag when you have a couple of 444s?  If you want a slower 44 cal bullet then buy a can of trail boss.  Also, as pete said the 44 is on a cast iron (shotgun) frame which limits the barrels you can add.  Please ignore my rants, I just bought and shot my first 444 within the last 10 days and am currently smitten with the caliber. ::)

gunther,

I have shot max. loads out of the 444 but only with 240 grain hp/xtps.  Gun has a straight stock, no recoil pad and no lead shot in the stock bolt channel and it was jumping a little with 55 grains of IMR3031 but not bad.  I just got a box of 310 grain GCs and another of 330 grain PB to play with so the scope may bite me yet. ;D
