Superlight barrel contour?
« on: September 27, 2010, 06:32:05 PM »
Working on taking some weight out of my little girls 7-08 and was wondering what the contour on the factory .243 Superlight measured.  I know that I will not be able to turn down the 7-08 barrel quite that much, but I'd like to have a reference.

Anybody have one they'd be willing to measure?

You'd probably be better off shortening the barrel instead of trying to turn down the diameter.

Shortening the barrel will take some weight off, but it will make it louder.

General muzzle diameters are listed in the FAQs, my 260 Remington Superlight(was a 243W) measures .745" ahead of the chamber swell and .615" at the muzzle.

If you really want to change the profile, I would e-mail Wayne York and ask him what the minimum o.d. is for the 7mm round on a chrome molly barrel. I had a superlight barrel laying next to a Stevens 200 .308 barrel and the .308 barrel was quite a bit smaller o.d. than the .243 superlight barrel.

Wayne's min barrel diameter for rebores up to .375" is .550" which is quite a bit smaller than a Superlight barrel.

I kind of had a feeling that Quick would know the answer. You also have to remember that you have to deal with the stock hanger when turning. You could do a step like the military rifles did. I am looking into fluting a barrel of mine, more for looks than weight reduction though.

The Superlight contour is heavier than I thought.
As for the forearm hanger, I"m just going to lighten the barrel fore and aft.

You may want to check with a smith, but I don't think you would want to reduce both sides, probably just the front.

I think I'd knock the stud off and reattach it later, it's not hard to do, I've done two with epoxy and wouldn't hesitate to use silver solder, either would be better than the resistance welds H&R uses.
