base height for a .243 Ultra
« on: September 28, 2010, 07:25:43 AM »
Gents,

I am currently deployed to Afghanistan and I don't have the actual barrel in hand.  I am trying to get everything ordered so it is standing by when I return home in late NOV.  I want to hit the woods and not be looking for parts and pieces.

I want to fit a 50mm objective scope to a .243 ultra barrel.  I want to mount as low as possible.  The Weaver ring guide says extra high rings are needed, but it doesn't state how high the bases are.  I need to know the base height above the top of the barrel (measured from the front of the base).  My hope is I can go with the "high" rings, but I need some measurements.

I would apprciate it is someone could take a minute and dig into their gun safe and take a quick measurement and shoot it back to me.

Thanks a bunch.

Steve

Welcome aboard Steve, and thanks for your service and sacrifice.  ;)

Objective height isn't a problem with H&Rs, base height is ~.400", but there's plenty of clearance for 50mm objectives even in medium rings depending on the scope, the interference point is the hammer at the ocular bell/power ring on variable power scopes, scopes with smallish parts there are less of a problem, scopes that have large dimensions there will need high or extra high rings unless hammer modifications are made, see the FAQs on that. As you can see in the pic, the 6.5-20x50 scope is mounted in medium rings, but still clears both the barrel and the hammer, a hammer extension is required tho.
