Got a new T3 in 7mm08
« on: November 29, 2003, 05:32:07 AM »
I got a new T3 yesterday in 7mm08 for 419.00. It's syn, blue and I really like the feel of it so far. I also liked a Browning A-Bolt in 25-06 and since the price was 519.00 I put it on layaway. Now can anyone tell me the best way to break in a new barrel? I've been told by some people that it doesn't matter....just shoot it and clean it after every 10 shots. Any opinions on this. Thanks

I usually clean my rifles once every 1000 shots wheather they need it or not. Open bolt and spray one half can WD-40 down barrel.....remembering to hose the bolt down good.....let stand for half hour, close bolt and your done......JUST KIDDING!!!! This will probably start a firestorm of replies! Also don't forget to drag the stock across a barbed wire fence to aquire the first scratch so you get that out of the way....oh yeah.....don't forget to drop it once to get that first ding in your scope and your ready for the woods. Seriously though, I clean my rifles after every outing that the gun is shot but really don't know much about break in procedures.
Quality will be remembered long after price is forgotten

I have never "broken in" any gun, and all but a couple have shot 1"MOA. I clean them before I shoot them the 1st time  and then at the end of the season that I use them in.  Granted I do not shoot hundreds of rounds thru them in that time period.  Probably more like 40-50. I have read that lapping the barrel etc.... can help with a barrel that is inaccurate, but have never had that problem.  Just my opinion.

Your T-3 requires little if any "break-in". By the time you zero your scope and maybe chronograph a few loads, your Tikka should be ready to go. I would throughly clean the bore and chamber every 5 rounds for the first 20, then clean it after each shooting session thereafter. The only reason for breaking in a barrel is to smooth out striations and rough spots. The process that Tikka uses for their bores leaves them very smooth. You should see some nice groups right out of the box.

My T-3 7mm-08 did not need any break in. Once I got it on paper, I cleaned it. Then I got it zeroed at 100 yds. Was using 140 grain  Remington Premier nosler ballistic tips to zero rifle, then as an experiment I switched to the Hornady LM 139 grain sst. Believe it or not they shot the same hole as the ballistic tips. I have not cleaned it since. Been carrying it to the woods every chance I get, but have not seen a buck that I would like to shoot. I do not want to give my stand away quite yet, but I am sure that I will take a deer with my new Tikka7-mm08.

Shot it about 20 times since the last cleaning, and it still holds a perfect zero. I am not going to clean the barrel until after hunting season. Just going to keep it wiped down.

I am glad the T-3 likes the 139 grain Hornady SST, because it is a awsome round on a deer. You hit one where you need to, it will split muscle tissue in the @$$ and punch a hole you can take a picture through. Killed a couple with my .270 last year, wow, talk about a quick Kill.

I guess what I am trying to say is, just shoot it you'll like it!!!!

I don't have a T3, but I do own quite a few Tikkas.  It similarly appears that none of them really required a break-in, although I do it anyway.  Heck, I consistently got sub-1" groups with the even the first 3 bullets!
