Any one know the life expectancy of a .17 remington barrel? It seems anything that shoots close to 4000fps should have a comparitivly short barrel life.

I used .17 Rems (2 off) to shoot foxes when they were worth shooting here in Australia. I kept accurate records of the number of shots fired, velocity was approx. 3920 FPS (chronographed). Cleaning was carried out every day the rifle was shot. Over the two rifles I replaced the barrel in one twice and the other once. The first rifle was a Tikka and the other a Remington. Both rifles shot .5 MOA. I found that this level of accuracy dropped off after 2000 - 2200 rounds. I have since sold both rifles ( and regretted it ever since) I now have a .17 Mach IV ( based on a .221 Fireball case), 3560 FPS and it has fired 2817 rounds with no drop off in accuracy.

Thanks. That is about what I expected. Ever try a 17 hornet?

I`ve got a .17 AH Bullberry barrel on a Contender frame. I made my own fore arm for it as the gun seemed to lite with what I had. With 10.4 grns. of H-4227, a CCI 400 primer and a 19 grn. Calhoon bullet I get 3,600 fps. and it shoots 1/2 moa. Max. point blank range( + or - 2 1/2 in. ) is about 290 yrds. I see guy posting that their getting a fair amount more velosity than this, but, that`s very close to max. in mine. The Calhoon bullets are very accurate in mine, but they are not fur friendly on coon size game, for them I shoot 20 grn. Berger MEF bullets. This is my favorit summertime carry gun.

I have not owned a .17 Hornet but have known a few that have and they have been great little rifles, very accurate and long barrel life as long as they are cared for
