T/C Contender - Choke on 357 Barrel?
« on: July 10, 2010, 04:35:50 AM »
Why would there be a choke on a 357 T/C Contender barrel?

I understand the choke on a 45 long colt because you can shoot 410 shotgun out of it.  What shotgun shells could you shoot out of a 357?
I think I've also seen 44 barrels with a 'choke' on them.  Is this really a muzzle tamer of some sort?  The 'choke' has 2 holes per side on the top.

I think it is a hotshot barrel. It can shoot a special 357 shot shell that I believe is no longer available.

Can you take the choke off and shoot regular bullets  ...  accurately?

Yep - you nailed it!!! As I recall, these barrels had a lot of freebore (long throat) and the plastic shot container went pretty far down the bore. Think Speer snake loads. The complete cartridge was a lot longer than a standard 357 Mag. I seem to recall they weren't all that accurate with regular ammo, but that's only a fuzzy memory.

Standard chambers on the 357 and 44 Hotshots. The TC shot capsules were spun by the rifling. The choke was either internal or external and stopped the spinning. They also stripped the capsule open.
TC warns against using ball ammo with the choke installed.

I do still see 357 hot shot shells for that barrel at some of the gun shows but they are still few and far between but they do make a fine snake gun.

The TC Hot Shot capsules and the still current Speer capsules are not one and the same, although both will work.  The Hot Shot was longer and round on the front end, and had a little more capacity for shot.  Of course the Hot Shot was designed for the Contender barrel and Speer designed thiers for use in revolvers.  The Hot Shot capsules and ammo(TC sold it as loaded ammo as well) have long been collector stuff and have become a little pricey, if you can find it.  I have some of both so I'll try to post a pic(I been meaning to learn to do that for a while anyway). :)

I have a full box of the 357 hotshot sheils from the 1970's.
