Shot the 500 S&W mag Encore Today
« on: June 13, 2010, 07:54:15 AM »
I've had my 20 inch 500 S&W mag barrel for my Encore a few weeks now but just got around to shooting it. It came with a fiber optic front and Williams peep rear sight on it. Now these old eyes haven't shot iron sights on a rifle in many moons but I thought I'd give them a try. Checked it at 25 yards with my light loads. 367 gr cast over 15.0 gr of Unique, approx 1250 fps in a pistol. Was shooting about a foot high, but a good group so I bottomed out the rear sight and shot again. Six inches high now and I'm thinking scope time. Decided to try out my hotter jacketed loads, 350 gr JHP over 35 gr of Lilgun for 1697 fps from a pistol. They were right around the bullseye at 25 and at 50 yards. Needless to say a 2 inch group with iron sights has me pretty happy by now. My last two shots were at a clay pigeon I put up at 100 yards. First shot was off by about 6 inches but I held steady on the second shot and busted it. I see now that if I do my job there won't be a scope on this one at least for a while.

If you like iron sights, how about a taller front sight?

It's shooting good with what it has right now. If I ever change anything it'll be to scope it.

Put a Millet Red Dot on mine and in 3 shots the scope was a rattle (all Glass)
was replaced by Millet.
please use a different scope.
Just use iron sights now

I've shot some lighter trail boss loads through my Encore .500 and had the same issue, way too high.  I was surprised as I figured the lighter load would group lower.  I've been sticking with the hotter loads, mine really likes 2400 with the 300gr Hornady FTX bullets.  Nice rifle, short, light, powerful, and accurate.

I did switch to a smaller, twilight apperature on the rear sight, which I found helped out my group consistency.

Have Nikon 2x7 Prostaff with Warne rings and no issue so far. Holds zero, doesn't move. About 200 rounds through barrel so decent test period for scope so far.

Put a 1x4x32 Bushnell on mine and accuracy is great. Really helped my low light shooting too.
