Dryer repair

 17 year old gas clothes dryer went out recently. Having only owned the one (before that we went to the laundrymat), I knew nothing about fixing them.

 The Wife said "Well, it is old. We do need a new one. Might as well get a new washer while we're at it."

 "Yeah, okay. Why don't you check the sale ads?"

 Meanwhile, I looked online and found...

 Removed the flame sensor and checked continuity. It was okay. Removed the ignitor and found it had no resistance. In handling it I found it had a crack (and it broke apart)....



 An hour diagnosing the problem and $25 for a new igniter and it's working fine. Didn't even have to move it; just flipped up the little door on the front and both parts I needed to check were right there. ;D

Good Job!

I have had to change the igniter in a gas stove but not the dryer (yet)...I did change the broken drum belt on the dryer within the last couple years, not a bad job.

I repair plenty of washers and dryers for the family and friends. I replaced the burner control gas valve on my mothers stove a few years back. Most of the appliance companys don't want you to know it but fixing these items isn't very hard. Finding parts is usually the hard part.

Is the burner control gas valve a generic item, or does it have to be brand specific?

Gas valves have a few common descriptors, like inlet pressure, BTU rating, connection sizes, but I think its worth going with the manufacturer's pick, even if its double.  You will only have to buy it once for fit, and if you have a near-end-times event, the courts might not view you as an inventor/cowboy.
Motors, light bulbs, contactors...general purpose.
Gas valves...definite purpose.
