45-70 Handi sights
« on: August 16, 2010, 05:36:41 AM »
I have reworked my 45/70 Handi to look more old-fashioned. i want to use it in Cowboy Action Shootinf for my long range rifle. I need more traditional sights open notch or ladder on rear, simple blade on front. I don't want to spend a fortune(not even half a fortune). I would prefer something that does not need ovetailing. Can anybody steer me to something.

Some here are using the 1896 Krag sight mounted in the scope base mounting holes.

If you hit the local gun shows, dig through 'sight boxes' for  (probably old .22RF sight) an open rear with the elevator bar and two screw mounting rather than dovetail. Where the screws go is contoured to fit around the barrel but it otherwise will look like a basic open sight. $5-10 should get one ( I know I have one somewhere in my bins).

We used a 1873 Springfield TD 45-70 rear mounted where the WGRS holes are on the rear barrel. Then replaced the front globle sight with a shorter Lyman 17. The original globe is tall for the new rear sight. This also has the added advantage of the sight marking being true to the distance used, 100yrds true 100 yards etc.
