Thanks Already! (update)
« on: August 01, 2010, 06:07:06 AM »
Been in the market for a truck/combine gun for sometime. Had it narrrowed down to about three and decided on a .223 Handi Rifle based almost 100% on the information available on this site. Stumbled into a bargain on a new synthetic/stainless and would have had it in my hot little hands right now but they "delayed" my approval on the background check. I know there isn't a problem as I've had several transactions in the past year. But - I've been scouring the site and I'm sure looking forward to getting "started" on this little gun.

If I can get an 1 1/2" out of it to start, I'll be tickled to death, but if I know me (and I do ;)) I'll be doing some mods - looking for better.

Expect to have me picking your collective brains in the future. :)

Thank you.. HH

"Delayed on the background check"? Why?!?

I have heard the system does that at times for no reason, just a "bug" or flaw that occaisionally shows up. Perfectly legitimate buyers who pass easily one day will be "delayed" on another day, to them pass right through later. Remember, it's a Government program, expect flaws....<><....:)

Yep, Kevin  - I did a little checking and I was told it might have amounted to no more than "late afternoon on a Friday". It *is* just another "office". Think I'll go ahead and get my "Pistol Purchase Permit" so I can avoid the "store" check next time.

I ran into the "delay" a couple of years ago.  The dealer explained to the very nice lady at BATF and/or FBI that I had a 175 mile round trip to come back.  She said "Wait a minute, I'll be right back".  She was with an approval.  It seems they can run them if they want to.

Oh, good luck with the little rifle.

It seems the delay is common enough to be 'expected', ie, business as usual. Maybe they think we will just forget about that 'impulse purchase' and go buy some golf balls.

ifin the barrel and attachments are right.

if you answer is  "no"  i have heard that winchester white box does a real gud job.

most of the .223's here are excellent in accuracy.

you will be happy !!! ;)

Thanks guys.. gendoc.. I don't reload rifle - but do have a couple friends who will  help me out. As I say, I have a tendency try to squeeze a little more out of them. Found a good sale on the cheap Remington UMC stuff. Don't expect a whole lot from them but I bought 3 boxes and plan to do a barrel break-in before I start to worry much about groups.

I spend about 6-8 weeks in a combine every fall. We have been overrun with coyotes and I plan to start making their lives miserable. ;)

Welcome aboard HideHunter. Handi's and tractors, Handi's and combines, for some reason they just seem to go together. There are many here that carry thier Handi's with them at work on the farm. All the best and get as many coyotes as you can, you have a great gun for it....<><....:)

Good luck HideHunter.

The only coyote that I ever saw from a combine was a small female and she ran along flanking the header waiting for a rabbit to break out across the field.

Sounds like you have more coy dogs than we do.

All that I ever hauled on a combine was a 22 single shot or a 20 ga single shot. I just hoped to see a rabbit. We had to quit carrying guns. The game wardens got to where they would take you  gun and your combine. There was a big problem with people killing deer. I'm in Miss and Tennessee allowed deer meat to be sold legally. That was a real problem until the F&W got real strict on transporting it. Hope you get to Keep haulin your guns on board. eddiegjr

Yeah - our "ground nesting predators" of all kinds are out of control. For 6-7 years  probably would have had 3-5 shots a season at yotes from the combine. Two years ago I noticed a marked increase in numbers and last year I would have had legitimate shots at probably 20. I could have killed 5 in one day - 3 in the same field. Thus - the "combine" gun.  Maybe I'll paint it IH red. ;)

If you paint it IH red, wouldn't that make it a combine "accessory" instead of a gun? On the serious side, my Handi .223 shot its first sub 1/2" group last saturday, 3 shot group, 100 yds, .338". It took a bit of work but that sure was worth it. Good luck and have fun. JamesIII

Sounds like you and the gun *both* did your part James - congrats and nice shooting. Still waiting on "approval". Sounds like this is getting pretty common. Maybe it's the new "3 day waiting period". Anyway, I've continued to read up on this little rifle. Sounds like they can get under your skin. ;)

well now, yall talk'n bout farm equipment shooters .....
i use mine in anathang i climb up in.
actually have 2 of the same, and both have been well used.
all the talk ya hear here of the 45/410 that " it won't shoot "
i guess that nobody ever took a lil time (days, weeks) to perfect it like i have.
lotsa things ya gotta do, and develop the right loads.
my tractor blaster takes down any critter that cross's my row.

i farm alot in tha dark also.. thats when the fire shows  ;D
kiyots run right beside the header like previously said.... waiting for other critters to run out.
thats when power steering comes into play!!!  stand out on the step wing and drive with your knee  ;D
or open the front cab glass and take a shot......
these handi's make tha best farm'n shooters  ;D

Okay - I'm in love  :-*.   ;D  Got the gun. Brought it home and gave it a good cleaning. Grabbed a scope and much to my chagrin discovered I didn't have a set of rings in the whole pile that gave me enough clearance. Finally dug through the scope drawer and found an old Weaver K4 that I trusted. The straight power gave me the needed room so I bolted it on and took it out to the backyard range. Gave it a quick bore sighting at 25 yards and touched it off. First round was about 6" high but good left to right. Dialed it to the bullet hole and touched off another. Couldn't see the hole so I walked out and found it nearly dead center in the black. (Oh, come *on* - surely not  :o). Gave it one more. It wasn't touching - but it was awfully close.

I have to tell you - by this time I'm already shaking my head. This just doesn't happen.

Picked up the target stand and carried to the 50 yard line. Drew a new 1 inch circle about 2" below the other. Back to the bench and sent one. Considering it was 94 degrees, and about the same humidity, I hadn't set up the spotting scope. Couldn't see the hole so took "the walk". The third hole was dead center in the first circle nestled right in with the first two holes.

I picked up the whole mess and went back to the house.

It went "bang". Trigger is a bit heavier than I like but is crisp. I don't think it's going to take much more to get it sighted in.

Now - I'm going to town and buy a lottery ticket. UN-Believable!

The saga continues: This morning I set up the target at 75 yards (all I can get in the backyard range). Fired three shots. 1/2" C/C group - 1 1/2" high. There's a hedge post down in the barn lot that is roughly 125 yards. I filled a pop bottle with red water and sent one that direction. It was "spectacular".  ;D

Now bear in mind, I have a -$250 rifle, with a 50 year old scope, shooting $7 a box ammo - and hit a pop bottle at 125 yards and touched the scope one time.  So conceivably, I could have killed a coyote at 150 yards with the *second* bullet down the barrel. :o I have now shot a total of 9 rounds.

Why didn't you guys tell me this before I studied reams of information on how to *make* these things shoot? ;)

I think I may have just what I want. Thanks again.

I'll just "bother" you guys one more time and I'll let it lie. Buddy and I were shooting a little the other night and I dragged out the "new" rifle. I set up a claybird at a lazered 160 and, though the crosshairs pretty much covered it up, I was a little disappointed when I didn't break it. Buddy was looking through the binoculars and said, "wait a minute."   :-\

These are some "mid-sized" birds I picked up off the sporting clays course about 15 years ago. Guess they are "hard". ;)

I still only have 14 bullets down the pipe. This little gun continues to amaze me.  :-*

Congratulations! I have a topper 158 that shoots that well right out of the box.  it still has never worn a scope but can hit anything I can see with the iron sights. DR
