Hello. Perhaps this topic belongs in a different forum but this one seemed as good as any. Anyone ever chrono'ed the same load(s) using lighter-weight bullets (275 gr - 350 gr) for a 500 S&W in both a revolver and Handi? I know much depends on the specific powder used but I'm just curious as to what (if any) differences have been seen. I'm going to start reloading for my Handi 500 S&W but everything in loading manuals is listed for revolvers. I'll initially be trying to achieve approx. 1,700 fps with the Barnes 275 gr XPB and about 1,600 fps with the 325 gr XPB. Either of these should be a mild recoiling load with sufficient velocity at 125 yds for reliable expansion. The range of 125 yards is not chosen randomly, since this is the farthest I've ever shot a deer in just over 17 years at the place where I now hunt.

Thanks.

John

Taffin has rifle velocities in his article, Hodgdon has pistol data for comparison.

Although it doesn't list the 500 S&W, it's still an interesting article that somewhat applies to this topic.

Thanks, Tim & Dinny, for the replies. Tim, the link to the John Taffin article you provided was perfect for what I was seeking.
