TC Icon- anybody own one?
« on: July 15, 2010, 06:40:19 PM »
I have an opportunity to pick up a TC Icon at a pretty decent price and was wondering what owners thought of theirs. The rifle is a low serial number with a nice piece of wood on it. It has about $200.00 worth of Burris scope on it. Gun and scope for $500.00 seems like a deal. The rifle is chambered for the 30 TC. I know it supposed to be equal to the 308 with performance ammo but I'll be handloading it so performance will be more like a 300 Savage. But I need another nice varmint rifle so 125 TNTs should make it a dandy round. The downside, if there is one, the seller does not have the owners manual or the trigger/bolt tool. So, what do the owners of Icons think about them?

You better snap that up.  I have one just like it in 30 tc & it's very nice.  The cartridge puts out close to .308 win. according to the loading info I have from TC.  This is early loading info, before anyone offered cases.  Expect 2900+ fps with 150 grain good handloads.  It consistently shoots in the inch range at 100 yards and when I really settle in most groups are under an inch.  This without much experimentation with COL or different loads, and just 3-9 X  scope.  It always shoots well.

Depending on which scope and does it have a walnut stock, but its sounds like a good deal?

I could have bought a new in box T/C Icon in 30 TC for $400, and I had to pass since the wife would have found out.  Anyway, I would have used 308 Winchester brass and mounted a Leupold VX-II 3-9x40 scope.

You can call Thompson Center and I know they will send you a paper manual and possibly the tool for free.  T/C Customer Service Phone: 1-866-730-1614

Here is the link to the manual online; all T/C manuals can be downloaded for free.

I had to laugh at this one... I am lucky, one gun safe at home the other at my office. Besides my paycheck I get expense checks so I do have mad money which helps sneak guns in also
BUT
The wife who never checks credit card statements found one with a $1300 paypal to a seller with accuracy in his name.

Buy it.  I have two Icons a 308 and 7mm08.  The 308 is the stainless with the AP camo stock and the 7mm08 is a stainless with walnut stock which was available through Lipseys.  I have only shot the 308 and it easily shot under MOA at 100 yards and I kept groups around 2" at 300 yards and 3" at 400 yards.  You will love the rail across the top of the receiver.  I wish other manufacturer's would do this.

I didn't have much luck using resized 308 win brass.  I bought 500 pcs. 1x fired 30 tc brass  that was  shot during the development stage of the cartridge.  Some had no headstamp.   Pretty much a lifetime supply for me.   Now Hornady or someone sells it new.

I do ask for forgiveness as well, but I bought too many guns this year.  I knew I would be pushing it past her breaking point.

Oh I thought it would have been an easy task to use 308 Winchester brass, oh well I am glad now I didn’t buy it.

I use my 308 Winchester brass for my Weatherby Mark V in 7mm-08 Remington, which is one reason I didn’t need the Icon in 30 TC.

I appreciate everybody's comments. It'll be Tuesday before I can turn the deal on it.

jcn59, I was planning on using 308 brass to form the 30TC. What kind of problems did you run into? I'm aware that the 30 TC is a more straight wall case and would require fireforming but other than that, what am I missing about using 308 brass?

Here's what happened.  I resized & trimmed to length.  I loaded and most would not chamber.  Then I took the resized brass & neck turned, then loaded some.  Some would chamber.  Then when I shot them, about half would split at the neck.  I loaded & disassembled a couple hundred "experimental" rounds & finally gave up & found some once fired brass.  I've been a happy camper since.

You are probably aware that the case body near the head is larger than the 308, huh?  Another problem waiting to happen with the 308 cases, & the 30tc is about .100" shorter than the 308.

Sounds like the brass I made for my 38/45ACP on a 1911. It looks good on paper and seems simple enough but the reality can be different. I think I'll learn from your experience and just buy brass. The cost of 308 brass, powder, and bullets to fireform was just about going to equal buying brass anyway. Thanks for the info.

I do serial # 5 in 30 TC paid almots 800 for it so snap up the one you are looking at.    I have never fired mine...as a member of TCA I always get to pick serial # 5 of TC's new stuff.  Doesn't look like that is going to happen much longer
