460 S&W Katadin Question
« on: August 02, 2010, 12:30:17 PM »
Can you shoot the 454 Casull through the 460 Katadin? If you can what kind of accuracy have you been getting, and which bullets have been working the best. To Deer hunt in Indiana we cannot use the 460 this year, the case length has to be 1.62'' or less, I cannot remember the minimum length, but that may be changing in 2011. So this year the 454 meets the case length requirement in a rifle. Thanks for the help!!

You can shoot the 454(and 45 colt) in the 460 but if your a handloader, why not trim your brass down to the 1.62" requirement and load the cartridge to the same OAL as the original 460 ?  Doing this will give you the same powder capacity as the original 460 with the trimmed down version but you will not be able to use the crimp groove, but with a single shot its not important.  I suppose a short/light bullet may give you some trouble reaching the OAL of the original 460.  This is just a idea that I think would work and would give a try if I was in your shoes but I don't have any experience with the 460 so I can't give any real world advice like you need.  But if you do like I suggest I can't think of a reason you couldn't get full throttle 460 loads from a shortened and legal round.    Dave

Thanks for the reply. My problem is I do not reload, and I do not have any friends that reload. So for now I am stuck with factory ammunition.

I thought about this also.  My best guess is that it should shoot better than most revolvers.  So however a decent revolver shoots, it would make sense that this should do a little better.  Probably 4 moa or better, just a guess.

Also, how are the rules going to change in 2011?  I live in IN also.  Thanks.

They are talking about going up to 1.8'' in case length, in 2011. This is not been approved yet but from what I have heard there is a good chance this will go through.

So then the 460 would be allowed?  Seems like such a minor change in the rules.  Any other cartridges you can think of that will then be allowed?  Maybe 50 beowolf for the ar-15.

The 458 socom(for ar's) falls within the current rules and if the rules change next year to 1.8" it would include the 50 beowulf and the 450 bushmaster chambered in the ar's.  A round that may be of interest for handloaders is the 357 herret(a wildcat), it would also fall under the 1.8" rule.  There might be some more but thats all I can think of.   Dave
