Forgiven me for I have sinned
« on: July 11, 2010, 05:31:04 PM »
Sorry fellow Handi-holic Brothers and Sisters, but I have sinned.   Dad, the GF's son(10yo), and I went gun shop hopping yesterday looking for deals on guns and ammo.   I was looking for a NEF/H&R combo youth sized .22rf/shotgun/whatever for the boy, but couldn't find anything.  ...so I picked up a Rossi .22rf/.410 combo for him for $149.

Do I get some blessing for it being a singleshot break action, or am I doomed to Hell?

Knight,

If you don't tell anyone about my Rossi MZ in the gun cabinet I will not say anything about your combo.  Good deal getting a young one something to hunt/shoot with.

Helping introduce a young person into hunting and shooting is never a sin.

22 and a 410 great starters that's what i started with at about 9 yr old. think you picked a good combo for him. let him shoot the 22 first.

I bought one of those and reamed the 22lr to 22 Mag and stubbed the 410 barrel to a .22 Hornet.  The finish on the frame is really nice, the LR barrel is good but has plastic sights.  The 410 barrel is really really light, so buy some real light loads for it, 2 1/2 inch shells if you can find them.  They take a TC Contender scope base so that is easy to find.  They have an odd hammer extension that sits over the hammer, I did some work on mine and mounted it upside down , but had to modify the lever to open the action to get it to work.  Larry

A gun is just like a parachute, if you ever really need one, nothing else will do.

That's a good setup for a kid. He'll probably like the 22 more than the 410.
You won't go to hell for buyin' it either. :D

Getting a kid into shooting always trumps the brand you buy.

I guess the "other" queston that should really be asked is why H&R not offering certain combos?
Then you wouldn't have to be in this position now would you ;)
Are ya listening Remington ???
In any event, like was mentioned, you are helping get more people into shooting and that is never a bad thing, keep the sport alive and well I say.

Just be sure the boy has llots of fun and lots of time in the outdoors toting the gun and the purpose is served. Good luck and shooting. eddiegjr

I bought this same combo for my son 8 yrs ago.   He started with the 22 but got frustrated with its horrible accuracy.   I tried many combinations of brands, bullets, weights etc., but this barrel won't shoot.   Not to mention the sights are skewed.

the .410 barrel is a totally different matter.   It was and still is my son's favorite.   It has a very tight full choke and does a number on squirrels, rabbits and birds.
I'm just tryin' to keep everything in balance, Woodrow. You do more work than you got to, so it's my obligation to do less. (Gus McCrae)

10 Hail Mary's otta take care of the problem. ;D  I only have one marriage, and it ain't with a piece of metal!  I like all guns, and just happen to have a few more of the H&R's than others.  I like 'em, they are simple and they flat work.  Nuff said.  DP

I got the same package for my daughter (you know, the PINK one).

No big deal.  I had to cut the stock even from the youth size, and get the hammer extension for her, but for the price, she'll get some mileage out of it for sure....
