357 Max accuracy amazing!
« on: July 02, 2010, 07:10:18 PM »
I am blessed with 4 handirifles that are .357 maximums. Two have SB-1 frames and two have SB-2 frames. I wanted to find a load that would work in all of them for deer hunting. Today I took them to the range and my friend Mike and I shot all 4 of them. At 100 yards, the worst group was just under 1.5 inches and the best group was 1 inch. I was really surprised and impressed. Oh yes, before someone asks the load was 25 grains of 1680, Rem case, Rem 7.5 small rifle match primer, and the Hornady 180 grain SSP bullet. This is 1.1 grain under the maximum load data. Use this at your own risk. It appeared safe in all my rifles. I wanted one load so that my grandkids and my son couldn't get ammo mixed up.

That is really a neat thing ;D ;D  Both my Handi Maxies are great shooters.  They're both on SB2 frames.  Unfortunately I lost MOA when I put Red Dots on them.  They're still Minute of Deer, but I miss the superior accuracy with the scopes.  The red dots just work better in low light for my tired old eyes.  I just got a set of Maxie dies and will try to get some 180 GC casts loaded this week.  I've got to go to Nu Joisey for a week, and I've got a shoot to go to Aug 7 and 8, so I'd better get my butt in gear.  The max has become my "go to" rifle for just about anything around here, except bear.  The .45-70 has that job.  Good shooting and hunting with the maxies, They're great little rifles.

I took my 3 maxies out last weekend and all 3 liked the 180gr Hornady XTP's a bit better than the 180gr WFN-GC's.  I have 2.5 power scopes on all of them and they aren't the best for small groups but get on game fast.  Largest group of 5 shots was still under 2 inches, 3 shot groups were in the 1" to 1 1/2 inch range.  I was also using 25.0gr of A1680.  I need to go back and see what the charge weight is for LilGun in the Maxie, I want to try that one next.  The XTP's were seated to the bottom cannelure and crimped.  DP

I read this and then went out and tried a similar load. 23.9 and 24.4 of 1680 with Hornady 180 xtps.

At 50yards the first three gave a 1" group. With the heavier load I got 4 into .3".

I also shot 3 over a chrony and was averaging 1835 fps.

I am stoked. I also shot some 125 grain cast bullets with trail boss. Not quite as good it was still
minute of tin can. 8 grains gave 1300 fps
