Trying to decide.... 19 or 23
« on: March 21, 2011, 05:15:37 PM »
I have a couple 9mm's and a 40 Cal and a bunch of 45's. I don't NEED another pistol... OK I said it, it done... I feel better...  ;D ;)

I have shot all the 1st gen and allot of the 2ND and 3rd glocks. But 17, 22, 19 and 23 mostly. a couple 30's and 21s and a 20 once. I like them all. I owned a 1st gen 23 for about a week and sold it to a buddie. That was long ago...

Basically, I am a 1911, 45 guy, but not a big auto guy. My heart belongs to the SA 45 LC. I have never been a 9mm guy. But I have owned a couple S&W auto's a 39, a 6906 and another F.S. sts decocker 59 sumthing. I currently own a Hi Power 9mm. If it wasn't for the Hi Power probably wouldn't have kept a 9MM. I have to admit, ammo has come some ways since I formed my opinions. In 40's, I had a S&W Shorty Forty and a KAHR 40. (Sold my 229) I am leaning to the 19. Mostly its ammo availability in a SHTF scenario.

A short time ago, I picked up a Sig 220 22LR with a 45 conversion in a trade. Always like the Sigs so figured OK. But its size I could just carry a govt. 1911 model. I am far more familiar with it. I got a good offer on it, so, I sold it. Thinking its time for another Glock... Now I have extra gun $$ burning a hole in my pocket!  :o ;D (SHHHH, don't tell the wife, she will wanna do something responsible like extra PMT on the house or credit card...  ::) )

I can argue for or against either till the cows come home. Help me decide, which do I need???  ;) :) :-\

The Glock 36 (smaller frame size, single stack 45 ACP) has been tempting me.  ;D

As much as I liked my G19 it went away and since then I've bought .40 S&Ws so my vote goes to the G23 which might be the best carry size. My G27 shoots nicely but I have to have a grip extender for control and if ya gonna do that ya might as well just get a G23 which I'll likely trade my G27 for when I find the right deal on one with night sights like my G27 and G22s have.

My new favorite S&W M&P 40c...DA trigger feels like SA.....thinking of adding 357sig barrel.....

my avatar pic is my 1960 Rambler I bought in 1972 for $175..6 banger 3-on-the-tree...drove it for 5 yrs  22mpg.. was "hot-rodding" (LOL) one night...tore out 1st/reverse gear. Drove it that way for 2 yrs(with no reverse and only 2nd and high)  Had to really plan ahead when parking.

I'd go with the 23 and pick up a Lone Wolf barrel and mags in 9mm. I prefer the .40 over the 9, but it's nice to have the option to shoot the cheaper and perhaps more readily available 9mm should the need arise.

This rings a bell....
The 9 will fire from a (23) 40 slide perfectly but not 40 from a (19) 9mm correct?

Get the G-23 then get a Wolf conversion package (barrel, mag, op-spring) in 9mm for it. PROBLEM SOLVED. Best of both worlds.  :)

One more vote for the G23. I bought a Lone Wolf 9mm drop and it works awesome. To save a couple bucks on mags I bought a half dozen of the Korean G19 mags, everyone of the mags I bought function perfectly.

It's going to be a 23. Then I'll get a conversion to make it a 9MM as well.
I stopped at a couple shops, no one has a used 23 in yet. A couple had new ones so I may just do that. Im not really in any rush.

Thanks for all the comments and links. They are most helpful.

Everyone should own at least one G-19!

I AGREE!!!!

Well guys, I did the deed tonight...   ::)
I now own a 3rd gen Glock 23, with nite sites, two hi caps and 50 rnds of ammo, OTD $450.

Now gonna look for some extra 23 mags and a 9MM barrel. I already have 4 M19 mags.

Range day with the Glock
« Reply #15 on: April 03, 2011, 10:04:26 AM »
I hit the range this AM with a couple handguns and was satisfied with the 23. It didn't like the Win White box FMJ's that came with the gun. But both my hand loads shot very well! I used Blue Dot and a Speer 180 GD at about 975fps and a Hornady 155 XTP at close to 1100 fps. But it didn't do as well as either of the 45's I brought.  :o ::)

Here is the 165 FMJ's shooting pretty fast, four mags worth @ 10 yards. Plenty accurate enough:

Here is 13 rounds of 155G XTP, with Blue Dot powder. Shooting a little slower.:

I am happy with how it shoots out of the box... Fun day at the range with the Glock.

The brass is in the tumbler, the guns are cleaned and in the safe... Now time to hit the online glock goodies stores! It's time for some mods...  ::) ;D

I ordered a 3.5# disconnect and a 6# trigger spring. Some XS Dot dot tritium sites. A Grip enhancer and shock buff.

For comparison here is my Govt and Commander 45's. All my groups seem a bit to the left. It was very windy today and the sun wasnt great. So I'm gonna blame lighting conditions. Cause I know the Colts are dead on R&L.

I would let the ammo price decide. You have admited you really don't care for either gun or cartridge. The difference between 9mm and .40S&W is fairly academic in the end. Lower ammo cost means more shooting.

Upon further reflection re., reading, nice choice  ;)

CW, The "Ultimate over travel stop" from LWD is also worth a look. For range use the reduced power striker spring really lightens up the trigger when used with the 3.5 connector and 6# trigger return spring. I'd check it thoroughly for reliability before using it for carry if you go with the lighter striker spring. Works great as a game gun. I've had zero misfires using Winchester primers in both .40/9mm in my Glocks so equipped. I've had a couple of misfires with Wolf primers, but I'm blaming high primers for those. Enjoy!

I would go with the G23, the Lone Wolf conversion barrel to 9mm is around $120 IIRC through Midway. A few G19mags and you're rockin. Those Lone Wolf barrels are just as accurate if not more than the factory Glock Barrel.
