Ultra 308 range report
« on: June 22, 2010, 07:47:34 AM »
Well after picking up some primers and bullets while on vacation I finally got to start on some loads for my Ultra 308. I started with 44gr of Varget in new Winchester brass with 168gr A Max and Federal 210 match primers and got a 1.970 group at 100yds. I checked for pressure signs and proceeded to load 44.5gr and grouped a .974, checked for pressure and loaded 45gr and grouped .403 ;D. Loaded three more at 45.5gr and the group opened up to .903. I believe I have a great start to a load for this rifle, now I will play with the charge on both sides of 45gr and then mess with the seating depth of the bullet as I loaded them to 2.800 C.O.L  . I only have 29 shots thru it so far and could not be happier.

Got to be something wrong!    Did you try to tighten the forend?

Sometimes cranking down on the takedown screw can open up your groups just a bit, or maybe putting the front rest forward of the screw might help also.

JK!.....Glad to see you've got a shooter!
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

Ive got a .308 Ultra and it's a shooter, too.  I haven't done any specific load development for it, but it likes my standard .308 load of Reloder 15 powder and a 168 GameKing.  It'll shoot it under 2 inches, hot barrel or cold, long string or short, it does it with boring regularity.  If I did any specific load development for the rifle, it might start shooting one-hole groups.  THEN what would I have to complain about?

I think it might shoot most anything. I had bought a box a the cheap Winchesters in 150gr from Walmart and they shot good enough that I could get by in a pinch with some minor scope adjustments. I cannot wait utill I get to fire one off at a whitetail this fall.

If he's carrying a singleshot, don't expect a warning shot!

I really like the way mine shoots but I wish QC would have caught the transfer bar problem I had with it. I just hated the thoughts of breaking apart a brand new gun, but all is well now as the problem was fixed and I have a nice 3 1/4 lb trigger job also.

both my brother and a friend had a problem with their transfer bars.  one was a 22 mag ultra and the other was a buffalo classic 45-70.  my brother just welded his transfer bar to the hammer and the other sent his back and it was repaired.  mine has been perfect from day one.
