Rem Model 7 Trigger Job
« on: June 07, 2010, 01:45:18 AM »
Hey all. Just picked up a model 7 rem sp in .223 and I love it. Beatiful looker and shooter.Had the trigger reworked by a local gunsmith to reduce the pull and he would only go down to 3lbs (from what he said) from whatever the factory setting was but I still find this way too heavy for distaces I shoot.
Before I go out and buy an aftermaker & have it replaced ..is there a way to safely lower the pull weight on it? There seems to be no external adjustment that I can see. Any ideas? Thanks Dan

See the sticky thread above on adjusting the M700 trigger. Model Sevens use the same trigger.

You can some times get the factory triggers down to around 2.5 pounds but not much under that safely. I've owned a bunch of Remington M700s and Sevens and have never yet felt the need for a replacement trigger. I've shot prairie dogs out past 400-500 yards with the factory trigger on my guns. I don't know what you plan to do with yours but I can't imagine a three pound trigger being too heavy for most any use a Model Seven might be put to.

On my Model Seven Predator in .17 Fireball I was able to safely get it down to about 2.5 pounds. Wind pushes the little 20 grain pills around a lot but inside of 300 yards if I can see a PD head it's a dead PD and if the body is showing so much the better but even a head is all the target it needs to that range. On calm days (rare when shooting PDs) it can reach to 400 but I generally break out the .22-250 for those ranges.

Thanks Graybeard...I'm only guessing at the 3lb number (don't have a trigger pull scale and going by what the smithy said) but am thinking leave well enuf alone. Shooting chucks at distance (75-100 yrds) and hopefully coyote down the line(150-250 yrds).Just downed a big male chuck this last Saturday  and the rifle shoots where I aim it allright. Guess I just have to get used to shooting it more..thanks Dan

I have only adjusted one Model 7 trigger, and though they may be similar to the Model 700 (which I have adjusted several) the one I lightened up would not safely go as light as I like.  It has been a couple years since I adjusted it but I remember that if I tried to get it any lighter it wasn't safe and was subject to bump firing.
