I have yet to shoot any critter beyond one hundred yards.  My longest shot was about 80 yards with a .270.  My shortest was about 10 yards with a .30-30.  My second longest was about 70 - tied with the .243 and .30-30.  I shot one critter with a .30-06 at 30 yards.  Take your pick.   ;D

If I could have it my way, I'd get a 7-08 and have it reamed to 7mm Mauser AI. Load it with a big bullet to modern pressures and be covered all the way around.

Ron

What would the 7x57 AI do that the 7-08 won't?

Shortest shot I ever missed was on a little doe at what I later paced off at 21 long steps.  I shot under her.

A light rifle , Perhaps a Mod seven,  or A Bolt , 20-22 inch barrel in 7mm-08 would be hard to beat for that application.
Low Recoil, and can easily make that 150-200 yd cross meadow shot.

.45-70 or .30-30 in a 22" barrel.  I'd avoid the rimless cartridges.
