How do you mount your Handi spurs?
« on: May 24, 2010, 08:49:52 AM »
This is the instructions that came with my latest Handi rifle:

Note the meaty part of the hammer extension body is shown on the front of the hammer.

I usually have mounted the extensions with the heavy part located at the back side but for some reason this time I followed the instructions...and this is the result after about 200 whacks:

New Uncle Mike's hammer extension is on it way.

What method works best for you?

My Spur came with the gun.
But you simply deside what side you want the spur- Right or left.  Easiest to put the rifle in a gun Vise or cleaning cradle,  Slip it over the hammer till and use the allen wrench.  There is a screw that tightens against the side of the hammer and holds it in place.
The screw is inside the knurled (checkered) part.

I don't install mine as shown in the factory drawing.  I mount them higher, so they're flush with the top of the hammer.  Just me, I guess.  I've had no problems with it.

I always mount them with the open side up for more clearance, but almost always modify them to sit lower on the hammer and trim the tip of the hammer spur, being lower there would be less travel and momentum which would reduce potential damage.  Have never had a problem with damage other that some older extensions have opened up a little from repeated tightening.

I think I used a dap of An Areobic adheisive (super glue or Lok Tight) on mine to keep it from wiggleling free.
Put it on the screw end where it touches the hammer.

Like Tim, open side up as low as it will fit on the hammer, no modification.
Son's a lefty, so I put it on the left side an I kinda got use to it there.

I mount all of mine open side up, it adds a touch more clearance.

I mount em upside down also and on the left side even though I'm right handed. I don't think I have exceptionally big hands it what I'm used to and don't have a problem cocking the hammer. PS and I don't have to worry about clearence on the barrel release.

Open side up, I have always felt that was the strongest position and IIRC the old instructions showed that, I will check to see if I have any of the old papers that came with them. Perhaps the new instructions were designed by someone with no expierence with Handis. I would say they owe you the new hammer spur (and an apology)....<><....:)

Open side up because I had the same failure happen when I installed it the way the factory suggest.

Low on the boot, with a slight inward set,

An interesting observation with the new hammer extension from Uncle Mike's. They show installing them just like the H&R instructions show.
This time I'll opt to not follow directions...

FWIW, the size of the extensions shown in their instructions and also the review at Midway appears to be a heavier made product.

Actually, it is virtually identical to the hammer extension supplied with the Handi rifle, with the only difference being in the size of the mounting screw, which is a smaller OD than the H&R extension.
