Lake Michigan Fishing Charter
« on: July 19, 2010, 05:13:28 AM »
Got to go on my first one last weekend. This had been schedualed a couple months in advance as three sil's and my own son along with the Capt & his first mate. The seven of us on that 30'-35' boat was not really overcrowded.

The Charter took place at Bentons harbor which is located at St Joseph Michigan. Fishing was poor in general due to several day's of s/w wind that took the water temp up to 76 degrees. The Cap't & mate did a great job of changing lures and depth fished as we trolled with 14 to 16 rods for five hours six to eight miles off shore. The fishing would have been much better if the water had been in the 55 degree range and I guess that it happens quickly if the north wind blows for just a few days. In short, we should have schedualed for May or June to get the better fishing.

Everyone did catch at least one fish and the fight of the Cohoe Salmon and Lake trout was incredible for a first timer. You just think that you are getting somewhere on the retreve when the fish will quickly strip line off the reel with the drag screaming!...some will even try and run around the front of the boat at a said 40-45mph along with doing some jumping or tail walking!

The Cost was $110 per person which included the license. The Cap't busted this down to $85 upon our return as per the poor fishing. Tips are appreciated and those two guy's certainly worked hard during the outing.
If you have been on a Charter you know what i am saying and have plans to return like we do. If you have not done this, it is definately worth the experience!

Sounds like a good time regardless.

I've never been on a charter, but would like to go one day. I really would like to go to Eerie for walleye.

Now that does sound like a good trip!

We took a cooler for lunch & drinks with us and another to hold those fillet's upon our return. The fish were cleaned by the Cap't and first mate almost as quickly as the time it took to type this.
We dumped a bag of ice on em purchased from a local petro station and then were on our way back home.

Edit: GRIMJIM, don't know whats up with the (Report to Moderator) thing. All I did was a simple copy, insert quote, paste. Maybe I reported you to yourself, hahaha. Was prob just a software glitch.

I did that around 10 years ago out of Waukegan, I think it was in the month of May. It was my wife, myself, and 3 other co-workers. After everything was over with we came home with 11 lbs of Coho filets. Definately a good time.

Thanks sniper. I'm a little low on cash right now but a few friends and I have been talking about going for a while now and it couldn't hurt to have a good contact.

I'm late on this one Randy but, I've done one charter up there for Salmon. Went with the Shriners and had a ball! Keep swearing I'll do it again, some day.

Yep, just being out on the boat for a day was worth it for this land lubber. Plan early, cost is not too bad if you can round up four other guy's plus yourself.
