Handi, 223
« on: February 21, 2010, 07:43:21 AM »
Read you guys for years first time logging in.
I just received a Handi in 223 from one of my sons.  I brought it for him 10+ years ago, it shot great when I last had it.  Now the boy got bit by the AR bug and had no use for the Handi, so its mine again.
Problem: It will not eject with bullet in the barrel.  Clicks fine without one.  So I took the barrel off and sprayed it down with breakfree.  Bullet slides in great, still will not eject.  Solutions?

Welcome! See the FAQs and Help sticky, there's info on working on the ejector, it may have broken/worn/gummed up parts. By bullet, do you mean a loaded round, entire cartridge? Bullet = projectile, cartridge = entire round ready to fire. ;) Are the loaded rounds factory or handloads?

Thank you, my pleasure to be here.  This is a loaded round.  Dies have bee set and used for years, after first use, I neck size only.

Neck sizing only will lead to problems, you need to bump the shoulder back a little and the problem should go away.  ;)

You can probably get away with just adding a BB ahead of the ejector spring to give it a little more force, you can order the spring from H&R or Brownell's, or get one from your local hardware store and cut to length.

But it probably won't solve the problem caused by neck sizing only, once the brass grows too long, pushing the shoulder back is the only way to fix it using the same brass. The internal flex of the action allows the brass to grow each time it's shot, eventually it's too long for the chamber, you can easily see this by trying to chamber a fired case, it should be flush with the chamber face, if it isn't, it needs to be full length sized.

Quickdtoo, Thank you for the info.  I took it apart today, cleaned and put a bb in to the end of the spring.  Spring works like a champ.  Problem I am having now is the bar catches the rim of the round just as I open, but seems too low to complete the action?  If what I have typed makes seens to you, do you have a solution.  I talked to New England and the lady said, if I wanted to send it for repair, to send it to Sportmans Haven.  Sure would like to fix it here.

Thank you,
Joe

You mean the ejector claw misses the rim and doesn't eject? Sounds like either the lifter button or spring isn't working right, did you put them back in after removal or maybe one of them is missing, see my pics in the FAQs of all the parts, Brownells.com carries them if they're missing. NEF? There is no NEF, just H&R1871.  ??? Sportsmen's Haven? Do you live in Canada? H&R's are repaired in Ilion NY if you live in the US.

Nope, I live in Ohio.  The Sportman Haven is in Cambridge, Oh 30 to 40 miles east of Columbus.  I talked to NEF, now I guess that they are called H&R 1871, to get a price for a 20 shotgun barrel to be put on my 12 ga.  so my grandson could use it.  I am 99% sure that the parts were put back in correctly.  Though, I will check it out in a tick.  The phone number for Sportsman Haven is 740-432-7243.  Thank you for your replay, I guess that I will keep fooling with it.

Unless H&R(Remington) has changed their policy, which I doubt, the only repair facility for H&Rs is in Ilion, I seriously think you were given misinformation, that may be a Remington repair option since Madison Customer Support does Remington's too, but I seriously doubt it's for H&Rs, I would definitely call again if you decide to have them fix it. Pic below is what the parts should look like disassembled, parts are close to there relative position to each other.

No, I'm way to smart to not put the little nipple thing in the ejector. No, I just never put that little spring back in with it.  I found it in the box that I put things in so I would not forget.  Go figure.  Shot the gun today works like a charm. Sorry that it took so long to get back, work keeps getting in my way from shooting.  Thanks for all the help.  I called Sportman Haven Friday, but they were closed at 1700 hrs.  I don't need them now, but still would like to know what is going on.  Thanks again.
