Rossi M 92 44 Mag Tube creeping forward from recoil
« on: July 29, 2010, 08:07:38 AM »
I could use some help. I have a older Rossi M 92 SRC in 44 Mag and after a few shots with Mag. ammo or even reduced power lead loads the screw on the magazine tube rides out of the shallow hole in the bbl. and rides forward. I have tried to drill the hole deeper but the bbl is very thin there so I couldn't deepen it much without going through the bbl. This didn't work as the screw still slips out of the hole and scores my bbl, lock tite didn't help so next I tried epoxing the mag tube carefully into the receiver but the problem still happens, I can only get a few shots and then the tube moves forward. I am at wits end on how to solve this problem. I would hate to drill through the bbl. as a last option. Any help would be welcome, and anyone else have this problem?.

I had the same problem, had the smith do it 2 times and have had no issues since.  If it happens again, I will have him dovetail the bottom of the barrel and put a harder block in it drilled and tapped for a larger screw.  The barrel is softer metal according to my smith, so he drilled and tapped a larger hole for a larger screw to hold it.  Now that I said it hasn't happened again, it will. :(  DP

1) Ensure that both the chamber and the magazine tube are empty.

2) Remove the forend/barrel band by withdrawing it's screw & sliding it forward an inch or so.

3) Ensure that the magazine tube is fully seated to the rear, in it's receiver recess.

4) Drill a small vertical hole, through the forend wood and the mag tube wall in the area normally covered by the forend barrel band, for an equally small diameter pin.

5) Install a metal pin so that it bears inside both the forend wood and the magazine tube, then reinstall the forend barrel band to cover it.

FWIW, I use a thin-headed screw ILO a pin, grooving the inside of the bottom of the barrel band for it,  to make removal easier @ teardown time.

ALTERNATIVE METHOD: Install an Uncle Mike's barrel clamp-type QD sling swivel stud onto the barrel, hard against the forward end of the seated mag tube.
