Recently picked up a contender frame and expect to visit a local gun show Dec. 28 or 29, to find a barrel. Will be looking for a 7 X 30 Waters, in either 12 or 14 inch length. But my real question here has to do with rings and bases for the scope. I am planning on purchasing the Burris signature rings with the pos-align inserts. Does anyone have any recommendations regarding the base? I am planning on the Burris base, based on the assumption that the Burris rings should work best with a Burris base, but was wondering if anyone has and input on the Burris base or any other brand. Anyone have any problems with the Burris base? Anyone prefer a different brand base, and why?

Get the Weaver 92A base and Burris Signature Zee Rings.

Don't get a ported 7-30 barrel. You will regret it. Too noisy and the recoil of the 7-30 just doesn't justify it.

I agree with GB on the 92A base, only thing I'd say is you might want to get one with an extra set of holes. listed on the websites www.bellmtcs.com and virgin valley's. I use Mike Bellm's, had my barrel drilled to accept 6 mounting screws and use the Burris Signature Zee rings with an older model (read heavy) Burris 2.5x-7x scope on the .30 Bellm barrel (13 1/2" long from CNC Cartridge - they don't have a web site). Makes for a very solid set up without going to a third ring. If you go for more recoil you might want the third ring and the 6 screws.

CNC does have a web site http://www.cnccartridge.com/
Virgin Valley makes a base that will accept Burris Z or Weaver rings.

Thanks for all the feedback. I'll be purchasing the 92A and the Burris Zee rings, just like the doctor ordered.

Just curious as to why you all recommend the 92A base. I did see where Bellam does offer the 92A base drilled for six holes, looks like this is also the only base he recommends. I am assuming that since it appears to be the only base he offers, and since there is unamious recommendation for it here there must be a reason. Is this a stronger base, does it have any particular advantages over other makes? Or is it just more readily available, or is price the issue?

Price is a consideration, the Weaver 92A can be had for about $8, the VV base goes for $35. The Weaver is aluminum and the VV is steel.
On very heavy kickers, the cross slots on a Weaver base have been known to wear, making the scope rings loosen.

I've never had a problem with Weaver bases myself. I've used them on barrels up to 35 Remington.
