New Savage Edge
« on: March 19, 2010, 08:35:15 AM »
Anyone seen one of these yet?  I seen one on Gunbroker a week or so ago and couldn't find anything about it online. Now Savage has the gun on their website but not much info to go on. Price looks nice, the suggested retail is $329!  Not sure if this is Savage's way of getting rid of the Steven's line or what but it looks like a decent gun, new stock, drop magazine, and barrel nut. It does look like it hase much more metal on the receiver area so i'm not sure if its the same exact action or what.

I may just have to pick one up in a .308 to give it a test drive ;D

Edge does not look like the Savage 10/110 action (have only seen pictures).  So maybe Savage is going to use Edge as there entry level centerfire and move the Stevens up to be their lowest intermediate.  MSRP  is 329 for the Edge and 404 for the 200.

Yea, I had looked that up after i posted...I supose Savage realized that with other arms companys were comming out with value priced entry level rifles. I'm sure this rifle is to compete with the Mossberg ATR & Marlin XL7/XS7 rifles.

I'll be calling Savage on monday to get some info, I'll post up what i find. This just might be a fun gun to tinker with and keep as a truck/woods gun.

it looks much better in the camo stock.
I have it on good authority that the telepromter is writing a stern letter.

Yea, it's also got an unusual trigger guard on it.  Looks like you could get to the whole trigger assembly with just taking the gaurd off it.

There is not much said about the rifle on the  Savage Web site . It does have the past Savage trigger and that is about all . you think there would be some more information with the anouncement of the new line .

So what are the virtues over the Sevens ? Is there any differance in the bolt /barrel lock up than the Savage Stevens line ?It looks like you could get at the trigger from the bottom .

I think it is a bit odd with out a write up.

I do like the clip over the blind mag .That is a plus over the stevens

I don't see it as a plus or a minus... it's just different.
Personally I like the blind magazine.

Thanks for the link!  ;D

I stopped by Dick's and Bass Pro last night, but they didn't have any in stock to check out.

Great job Savage - Now the ugliest gun is no longer the Savage 110/Stevens 200.

Hey, if it works like the rest of the Savage's i'll be happy to have a place for it in my safe.

I don't really care how it looks, if i can use it and it does the job i need it for then i'm happy. Its a tool plain and simple. I don't buy things because they look pretty or because i think one looks better than the other, its on how it feels in my hand and what the best price is for quality.

If you like to buy your guns to make a fashion statment or because you think your paying extra for an accurate gun, more power to ya. From what i read on sites most everyone thinks the barrel nut on Savages look like crap. I see it as a better way to install barrels for better accuracy and a easier way for me to change them out myself as opposed to paying a gunsmith to do it for me.

For this Edge, i'll consider this from Savage than i would ever consider a Remington 710/770. Who needs a pinned barrel ::)

I saw one in the store here a week-ish ago.  The receiver looks/is significantly different than the 110.  The bolt body and bolt head appear to be the same, though of course I didn't take it apart. :)  The bolt handle feels like some sort of lightweight cast material.  It almost feels like a composite, but I'm thinking it's a casting of some sort of metal.  Feels almost like magnesium, but I'm quite sure it's not for cost reasons.  Still uses the barrel nut, so between that and the bolt head appearing to be the same, they should be just as easy to re-barrel.  I don't care for the 2-position safety; I like the 3-position better.  Shelf price was around $280.

Almost forgot:  The bolt is smoother than at least some Savages, but it's not what I'd call smooth.  My brother's Marlin is dramatically smoother.  I know he's prone to sitting in front of the TV working the bolts of his rifles to make them smooth, though, so maybe it's not quite a fair comparison.  A definitely fair comparison is that the Weatherby Vanguard's bolt is MUCH smoother.

MZ5,

I bought a Marlin XS7 back at the first of the year. I had my choice between the Savage or the Marlin. I own a Savage 116, and really like it, but the newer Savages just were not as smooth as the Marlin was to me. I have yet to shoot the Marlin, as I got delpoyed before I could get to the range.
