Topper 158 30-30 buy
« on: April 03, 2010, 06:19:58 AM »
I just bought a 30-30 topper 158 which also had a topper Jr 20 ga barrel with it for $200.  The rifle has open sights, and is drilled and tapped.  The wood and barrel appear to be in decent shape for the age, the shotgun barrel has quite a bit of its bluing that has speckled.  Did I get a decent deal on this?

Sounds like a great deal to me.  The Topper .30-30 is light enough to make it work carrying over a Marlin or a Winchester.

You got a good deal. The Topper 158 30-30's are sought after because they have a thin contour barrel that makes them very lightweight. Plus they are very accurate. You could post the 20 gauge here in the classifieds, someone will grab it. Those are also very popular. I'd personally keep the 20 barrel, you can't beat having a lightweight shotgun that carries very easily in the woods all day.

For the price you got in for, yeah, even cheapskate me wouldve done it!
I know somebody here was recently looking for an older 20ga. barrel. Hold tight, I bet he shows up.

If you bought that 30-30 for your sons, you better not shoot it yourself.  You'll love it so much you will have to go and buy a couple more for them!  Love those Topper 30-30's!  44 Man

Is there a base that allows the use of the attached sights along with a scope?

200 bucks sounds like a good deal to me.
BTW, I love all three of my topper 158 30-30 combo sets.
Now you need a 22 jet and a .410 to make it a complete set.
If it is a non profiled barrel you will not find the jet only a hornet.

Looking at the FAQ, I believe that I have a 1972 model, the rifle barrel and receiver numbers match.  The 20 ga  barrel did not have any numbers anywhere on the barrel and is a Topper Jr 490.  Was this normal for the combo set?  Tally, I look forward to hearing about your set up.  Thanks for the info guys.

The Topper Jr 490 was made 1961-1983, so it could have been added as an accessory barrel, or someone else put it together, H&R doesn't always mark the underlug with the last three frame SN digits, I have at least two that are unmarked.

godogz, as promised, here are some pics for Topper 158 scope mounting I have. No doubt there are other ways to mount a scope on a Topper, but if there's another scope base that won't require the rear sight to be removed, I don't know which it may be. And I like a low scope mounting (particularly with the straight stock I use) so my hammer extension is one done by Quickdtoo, drilling and tapping into the hammer spur to fit a Winchester screw-in hammer extension - I think it is a Winchester, if not, I'm sure Quick will be along to provide the correct info. ;D. (scroll down a bit for a better view of the hammer extension.)

Scope is Weaver K3, mounts Weaver detachable, base Weaver 60A.

Scope detached from the mount.

Top view of mount, note how it does not interfere with flip down rear sight.

Next two pics show side views of mount and relationship to rear sight.

The complete rig:

You're right on Kerry, it's a Win model 94 hammer extension, unfortunately discontinued tho  :-\, more info in the FAQs on the modification.

Thanks for the info - wow, I like that forearm.  I just like all the info that is available on this site.  This is what got me sold on the the H&R brand.  I don't think that there is another brand of firearms that has such a friendly and knowledgeable base and message board.  Plus the simplicity of the weapons themselves have me hooked.  These guns should be a wonderful way to introduce my sons - and daughters if they decide they want to in the future too.

I just re-checked my serial number again with the FAQ to make sure that I was right on the date.  I was wrong, it is a 1973 model.  From checking online, Tally's set-up might not work because I would require a different base - am I correct on this assumption?  I'd like to keep the rear sights on the barrel if possible.

They all use the same base mounting pattern so that's not a problem, the early bases just looked different.  ;)

I got one of the scope bases on eBay.  Check there.  The guy is in PA and has a bunch of odd scope bases.
