I don't think there is a max. length for pistols.
You will need a hell of a holster for a 26" barrelled pistol though. ;D
I carry my Contenders w/ a sling, even at 10" they require too big of a holster for my taste. ;D

I guess it's open to alot of interpretation and/or preference...... I and alot of other folks here have 16" barreled pistols.
I called David Vanhorn once and asked what length barrels he prefered on the Contender, his answer- for a pistol--15-7/8" as for the rifle--16-1/8". I kinda got a kick out of that.

when  it reaches an  over all  length  of  26  inches  it is a rifle

or  more accurately  put

never  cut a rifle  below an over all lenth  of 26 inches
and  a barrel no less than  16

I don't think you can have a barrel that's too long for a pistol, but it must be 16" or longer for a rifle.

There is no federal reg for maximum barrel length for a pistol.  Nor is there a maximum overall length for a pistol.

Thanks alot guys, I`m new to contenders, and that helps. Strange laws in Indiana... You can hunt with pistol caliber rifles or rifle caliber pistols.. Go figure. I got the contender to hunt with, and also picked up a ROSSI ss M-92 .44 mag.. Either should do the trick... Thanks again, Gary

Completely wrong on this point.  A buttstock is what determines if its a rifle not the barrel length according to federal law.

As far as individual state laws, that is where any additional requirements may come in above and beyond the federal regs.
