.45 Colt
« on: March 18, 2010, 05:39:59 PM »
Been reading [here] about this neat looking little rifle. Walked into a gun shop today without one, walked out WITH one.
You guys still playing with 'em? A bit of walnut and case colors sure make a H&R a looker!

I'm just doing one for the second time.  16.5 inch .357 Max on a BC carbine stock set.....sweet ;)

I gotta be missin somethin.  Maybe I'm dead and haven't realized it yet.  Everyone talks about recoil in the .45.  I never experienced anything to bruise my shoulder.  It's gotta be the way yer holdin the gun.  Shootin off a rest, to my way of thinking, puts the butt up higher on your collar bone if yer leanin into it.
Hold it a little loose, and whammy ???

I'm with Pete on the recoil thing, I have one of the wimpiest shoulders on the planet and I've yet to feel any pain from my .45 Colt, even with max loads from the Ruger-T/C section of the manual.

True I guess I am a Pansy. I shot 30 rounds through it off a bench,on sand bags. For some reason my 8MM Mauser(with steel butt plate) bruises my shoulder also after shooting 30-40 rounds through it also?I don't believe I ever complained abou the recoil, but I do have a bruise. It also dosen't help that pretty much every rifle out there has too short a length of pull for me.So take my comment for what you will.I have been shooting single shots for several years, and know to pull a rifles butt In  to my shoulder. ;)

If by chance you are on 'an apirin a day' therapy (or lots of other meds) you will bruise easier.

No meds for me, my shoulder dosen't fit most curved butt plates.I seem to do better if a rifle has a butt plate that Is more on the flat, rather than curved. The curved ones tend to have two points of contact rather than a flat one's broader contact area.

Little trivia for ya...A curved or crescent but plates are not made for shoulder shootin'.. they don't fit any-one's shoulder... they are for arm firing. Up at the top of the arm near the shoulder.  ;D

I know what you mean about bruising... since my heart attack last year, I bruise easily too... never did before. Factory loads on L Colt are pretty lite. Buy some +P loads and you begin to wake it up. But its not a bad recoil wise. I recommend a slip on pad like a limb saver to save that nice wood stock you have...

Guys, I gotta tell ya, the 45 colt loaded with a 315 gr SWC sittin on top of 24.0 gr H-110 has a bit of a snort to her. ;)  I didn't like how the slip-on Limbsaver fit the butt plate, so I switched stocks around.  The little carbine is fairly light, so she's a bit lively when you touch her off.  Didn't hurt, but after a day at the range, kinda felt like ole' Arther Itis had come fer a visit. :(   Huntin weather with a coat, no problem.  T-shirt in the summer, hum, not as much fun as the 357.  DP

I can imagine it does!
I just picked up my .45 Colt Classic today but won't be able to fire it until tomorrow.
My plan is to find a charge of Trail Boss that will work with my favorite .45acp bullet, a Rainier plated 200 grain SWC. This should make a nice light combo.
I'm pretty impressed by my new carbine, lockup is excellent, the trigger is better than my 10 year old .357/30-30 SB-2, and I think I can live with the sights the way they are. The wood is also nice, better than you see on new Marlins anyway.
Someday I might strip the glossy poly finish and do a nice oil job on the stocks.

Alan

Funny thing happend today also.  I just picked one up.  My Son works at a gun shop and on the way in I asked him to check.  Called back and told me they had one.  On the way in I stopped at Coinstar and dang near got the full price out of a couple of years pocket change. I have a Puma in 45lc and a few hundred rounds loaded.  If it stops raining I will give it a go in the morning

I shot my second one today for the first time.  The rear sight was setting way to the right as you look down on the barrel, 3 shots at 40 yd and nothing on paper. :-\  Drifted the rear sight over till it lined up in the middle of the barrel and tryed again.  2 touching and 1 about half an inch off them just to the upper right of the bull. ;D   Had 3 different loads with me so didn't mess with the sights anymore, just played.  Lock up was almost to tight  before being shot, but releases fine now.  Best news for me is the chamber is tight, this one is gonna be a 454 when she grows up.  50 rounds of 45, 20 rounds of 45-70 in a guide gun, 50 in a new 45 acp and 50 in a 38 super plus no winter damage at the cabin= a very good day. ;)  DP
