Weaver 1x3x20 on Guide Gun
« on: March 03, 2010, 07:40:44 AM »
Does anyone have any experience using a Weaver 1x3x30 V scope on a .45-70 guide gun?  It seems to be a reasonably priced scope with the right magnification for a guide gun.  I was just wondering how it has worked out for someone whose gone in that direction.  Thanks for any replies.

lot of people use the low magnification scopes on the guide guns. good fast target acquisition keeps with the theme of the short barrel, fast handling gun... as long as the scope is quality (which i believe weaver is) you will be just right!

thanks for the advice.  i'm kind of interested if anyone with a weaver 1x3 has had good or bad results with the scope.  i have a burris 1.5x4 LER scope and might also mount that on the rifle in a scout setup.

I've got one on a Marlin 357 magnum.  Great little scopes and very tough.  I plan on putting on on my Marlin 45 Colt also and would have no qualms putting on on a 45-70.  The one distraction is on the 1X setting the front sight is visible in the lower 25% of the scope picture.  It slowly disappears by the time you get to the 2X setting.  A little distracting at first but easy to get use to.  Great little scopes and they just look right on a lever.

That scope will work fine. I have a Leupold scout on mine and the specs arn't much different than yours.

I have three Weaver V3 scopes, two bought a few years ago @ $99 when a local dealer had a "deal", and the third last year @ $139 from  www.swfa.com - ALL work great on every rifle I have put them on.

After moving them around to different rifles (due to different hunting situations) like a .30-06,  a .375H&H, and a .444, they now more or less permanently reside on an M1895 Marlin (22"), a .30-06 Remington 7400, and a Ruger .338 Win Mag.

I've found the scopes to have exceptionally bright optics, with excellent eye relief & F-O-V's.
The matte finished V3 looks better on my Marlin, while the other two (gloss) look right at home on the other rifles.

BTW - I found that SWFA is one of the least-expensive (if not THE least expensive) source of new optics & mounts.

Thanks for the great feedback, everyone.  I agree with the SWFA comment.  I've found SWFA to be a very good place to do business, either new or off of their Sample List.  Thanks again.  I'm reassured with Weaver as a choice.

I think it would work great on there and not break the bank.

I have one on my 1894SS (.44 magnum) and like it a lot.  My 336 30-30 needs one instead of the 3-9x32 that's on it now.
