Had myself all set with an order on the new Kimber 8400 in 300WSM. Bored and surfing the web, I recontacted Weatherby to find who they sent the close out Accumarks to since I upped to a larger caliber. I have the affliction of being left handed, and Weatherby will not be making the Accumark in left for 04. Kimber will be making the 8400 in lefty early in 04, so I need to act soon. I called the distributor that Weatherby referred me to, and they confirmed they have a .300 Win mag in the Accumark stainless left handed, and it is priced very comparable to the Kimber. Both would be under $1000. The Kimber would be blue with wood, and the Accumark is stainless fluted with composite stock. I have not owned either brand, or either cartridge. The price on the Weatherby is a significant discount due to the close out on leftys. Any advice or feed back would be greatly appreciated. Also should the caliber be a consideration since they are so close. Thanks again.

Never owned either one, but my neighbor has a Weatherby. I am kinda a big guy who has been recoil sensetive and never considered owning a 300 mag, but after shooting his gun I found it to be easy on the shoulder considering the medicine that is dosed out at the other end. It shoots the Hornaby 180 grains great, sub 1". I would not want to take to the range to shoot a couple boxes of ammo, but sighting it in is no problem and even squeezing off a few shots every now and then. I just think the have a great stock and a good balanced gun.

Never been much on wood stocked hunting rifles or blued barrles. but never heard much bad about the Kimbers.

Curly,

The Accumark is a much heavier rifle than the Kimber 8400, as such, recoil will be a reduced accordingly. However, only you can make the determination as to whether weight is a primary issue for you.

As for the Win Mag vs. WSM debate, the recoil is about the same with the WSM having a bit less recoil all else considered.

In my opinion, despite Weatherby's higher MSRP, the Kimber is a better quality rifle. However, an accurmark for $1,000 is a steal. Plus, it's available right now for you.

Also keep in mind that WM ammo is much more widely available than WSM ammo.

Given all of your concerns, I think that I would go with the Accumark - if you don't mind the extra weight.

WSM's are selling at a rapid pace out here. I am getting a .270 WSM and a .300 WSM. The .270 will be a barrelled action (Howa) set in a Boyd Laminate. If this project turns out good, I will do the same with the .300. If I want something different, I will get the Browning. I am able to do this from the funds I will be getting from selling my .300 SBGM. Just not my cup of tea. Ammo for the WSMs is getting easier to find.

Adding another glitch to the scenario. I went to see long time family friend, and gun dealer where the Kimber was on order. Being lefty, and preferring stainless, he advised to also consider the Remington Custom shop Mountian Rifle Ks 700, which is also stainless barrel, action, trigger guard, with a blind magazine. Price is a little more, but he felt the benefits were worth the extra money. Anybody have any experience with the Custom shop rifles? There are a good selection of calibers so that should not be a problem. I can have the .270, .300 Win Mag, or the rums and saums. Thanks again for any help.

In my opinion, Remington custom shop guns are not all that they are cracked up to be.

If you are really into stainless rifles, I would get a Remington BDL SS and have a competent gunsmith do some work on it - mount an aftermarket stock, have the action pillar and glass bedded, have the action trued, and a trigger job done. All of this will probably costs you the same as a Remington Custom Shop gun, or less, but it will be a much better gun.
