Build for the grandson! (pics)
« on: February 28, 2010, 02:33:06 AM »
One built, one started, two to go!!!! ;) I have four grandkids, two girls, two boys. My goal is to give each, when older a tender rifle.

This little gal is Ashlie (aka Bug) Bug enjoys walks in the woods, riding the 4 wheeler and shooting my Ruger 22/45.

Her rifle, a 17" tapered FRO 17Mach2 was the first one completed.

Meet Bubby, monster truck nut! He loves the woods, also shooting the Ruger 22/45, and anything the Popster is doing!

Bubby's build has a long ways to go! This is my first attempt at a stock from scratch and will take some time as you see I have a lot of wood to remove. I'm thinking a MGM barrel in 30-30Win. 20" to 26" octagon would look cool on this one. I know the 30-30 dosent need a 26" barrel but it would look cool.

Nice idea there.  Is there much to inletting the stock to the action?  The shaping of the stock can be the fun part.

Setup setup setup is the key to inletting, and having the tools. It requires drilling three holes all in line with each other. Then the inletted area for the frame has to be cut at a 30% angle to the three holes. There is little room for era.

Dave,  That's one fine looking crew you got there.  Grandkids are life's reward for surviving the mid-life crisis(whatever that was).  I'm up to five and counting.  How could life get anybetter.....well, a couple of 'em could live a little closer.

Awesome absolutely awesome...    ;D

I started my son when he was 5 with a single shot Cooey bolt action 22LR rifle when he was 10 his birthday present was a s/s T/C Contender carbine with a 21" factory tapered barrel in 30-30 when he was a bit older and wanted a little better performance I had a fellow who's name is no longer allowed to be mentioned on this site rechamber the barrel to a 308X444 = 444 Marlin brass necked down with 308 Win dies and loaded to 300 Savage ballistics = 150gr @ 2600fps.

I also bought him a s/s 16.5" 22LR match chamber barrel and a blued 18.5" 10mm barrel.

Here are my thoughts on barrel length the little fellow is going to have to try and hold it so go shorter a 21" factory taper would be the longest I would get for him...

Also get him a factory tapered 22LR barrel so he can practice to his hearts content bonus is ammo is cheap and readily available, I would get a shorter barrel that weighs the same as the 30-30 barrel so when he is practicing with the 22LR he will have the identical weight to deal with which will be a total plus on getting him to be proficient with the 30-30 barrel.

My son is now 25 years old I started a new life 7.5 years ago and now have a 3 year old son that will be using his brothers T/C Contender carbine except we now have two frames and 8 barrels to play with...

Ok I use these rifles more than anyone else now...   ::)

I know what you mean. I do have two Chipmucks rifles in the safe for teaching and training. Also have youth stocks for the Tenders I have capable of small game up to deer.

This build is not for his youth years but rather to have and use when hes an adult. He spends time in the shop helping me work this set. Hopefully I,m around to present him with in his later years.
