Ruger quit making these because nobody wanted them, even after they made substantial modifications to it during its few years of production. I handled a few at gunshows, and they seemed really handy, and easy to point. But, certainly no better than M-1 Carbines, and the prices on them were definitely in the M-1 Carbine range. Also, it is great that they take a pistol mag, but having that magazine jutt down there under the stock 6 inches really takes alot of the handiness out of it.
I believe that following the police shoot-out in California, where the gunmen were robbing a bank and the police had no rifles or carbines whatsoever, Ruger probably figured they would sell tons of these to police units to keep in the trunks. It just didn't happen.
The one big negative I can comment on is the trigger pull. I was allowed to dry-fire three of these at different times, and in each instance the trigger pull was very hard and very gritty. In other words, terrible. (Maybe there are solutions to this?)
These would make great plinkers, but I just can't see having one as a serious sidearm. And, since they were only made for a short time, where are you gonna get a spare part when something breaks?
My advice would be to get to a range, and shoot one alot, before you decide to buy. You may decide you love it, or you may decide you hate it.
