I bought the house I am now living in over a year ago. It has not been remodeled or touched since the early 60's, so obviously, what with my regular job and this, I have been busy. Last Sat. I finally took a little R&R in the backyard with the metal detector. When I dig, I mark off an area about 10 x 10, turn my discrimination off, and dig everything. Along with a couple pull tabs and a lot of nails, I got a very consistent reading on the Whites and began digging. 18" down, and still no sight of anything, I'm thinking I just hit an underground pipe or something. Moving away, it still centered in one spot. Another 6", and well past my elbow deep, I dug up a Mason jar of pennies, all wheats, the newest was 1936. No key dates, but lots of BU. Now I'm feeling good, and about to cover the hole. My habit is always to recheck. I'm STILL getting a very distinct reading centered on the hole. A few more inches, another fruit jar, all with silver, again the newest is 1936, and lots of it BU. Face value a little over $30.00, haven't looked them all up yet, but again, no key dates.
Just goes to show ya' the treasure we seek may be under our very feet. Now I've got over 8,000' of yard yet to go, along with several vacant lots where houses have been demolished nearby, and before new construction begins.
That kitchen may have to wait a while for it's update. The houses in these parts were built between 1890 and 1910.
