Good news from Midway
« on: April 21, 2010, 03:15:04 AM »
I got an email from them yesterday saying my Lee Anniversary Kit and all the dies for my pistol caliber Handis have been shipped.  I've got my dies for the .45-70 and bullets, primers, powder and manuals, so as early as today I may be ready to start.  I haven't gotten anything for the necked calibers yet, but that will come.  This all was a birthday present from Patty.

All the goodies arrived today except the .45LC dies and they'll be here tomorrow.

Tim, you're not kidding.  I've had an order in with Reeds for a month for two boxes each .357 Max and .445SM.  I checked today and was told the Max was on the shelf and there was no ETA on the .445s.  I asked them to please ship the Maxis.  That'll give me a total of 200 once fired max brass to reload.

I almost forgot to mention, I'm thrilled with Midway.  They told me two or three weeks ago most of my stuff was backordered and gave me arrival dates here.  They were right on the money.  Great CS.

happy birthday pete and congrats on the reloading hobby. I've been using the same press you bought for years. The straight walled pistol cartridges are good way to get started IMO........Mike

Thanks Mike and Andy.  Yeah, I have a ton of pistol brass and figured it would be the easiest place to start.  I did get a couple of hundred 405 gr. bullets for the .45-70 that I want to try real soon.  Man...this reloading only pushes the Handiholic fever deeper ::) ::)

The best place for me to get powder and supplies is at Jay's in Gaylord....about 2 hours away.  Ya gotta make a list, check it twice and go.  Also, ya can't be worried about dropping a few bucks cause you're saving the HAZMAT fee and buying the gas to get there.  Best to stock up when ya can.  I'm reading all I can to determine which powders and primers would best suit the calibers I want to start with.

Happy Birthday, Pete and many happy returns.  Yeah, the handis are fun to load for and they are strong to boot.  Don't push em too hard to start with, though.  I usually find the best load somewhere in the middle.  Besides, my old, bursitis ridden shoulder doesn't appreciate really hot loads - at least not in the big bores.  Good luck and enjoy yourself.

I had two RCBS presses and three Lee presses.  One of the RCBS presses I gave away, the other is used in conjunction with the Lee presses.  I deprime and resize with the RCBS sometimes when in a hurry, and have the Lees set up for a different caliber.  Or when doing pistol cartridges.  The Lees see 80% of all my reloading, especially with the big stuff.

Pete,

I have that same press and am very happy with it. I've reloaded 650 rounds of .38 Special so far and it works great. Once you get going you're going to love reloading your own rounds.

I have used a Lee single stage to load for my 44mag for about 15 years. Very sturdy and easy to use.

Midway gets the majority of my online sporting goods purchases. I placed an order Tuesday at 11pm, shipped Wed, should be here tomorrow. That is fast!

I have a Lee Classic loader coming in 308 - the kind you whack with a hammer - going to work on some loads at the range.

I would have steered you towards the Lee Turret Pete , It is a great  press for the pistol calibers , and isnt all that bad with the rifles either , Just isnt as fast ;)
Congratulations are in order regardless the press.

Reloading can be more fun than shooting. More expensive too. Getting to where I want an RCBS seater die set up permanently for every bullet I load. I started with Lee and found that they cover 99%, but when you start taking dies apart or using different types of bullets or going extreme in overall length; ie really getting weird, the RCBS stuff just feels better.

I got set up yesterday and started this morning.  I just took a break from depriming .38s.  It's still cold in the barn and I can't work with gloves.  I did about 300 and have at least that many more to go.  I figured do 'em all while I had the die set installed.  I've got about 200 Maxis and 400 or 500 .357s to do also.

I couple of buddies and I are going to sneak off to Jays pretty soon.  I'm gonna need lots more bullets and I want to pick up 3 or four more different powders to try.

I think I've been bitten by the bug ;D

Pete, You might want to consider the Lee Hand Press No.90685. That way you could sit in the house and do a'batch' of cases over a cake pan in your lap while watching a movie. I now have two (1 new, 1 cheap from gun show), as well as my old, early Lee 3 station turret press and a big RCBS for heavy duty reforming work. All in all the hand presses have been very handy and dont tie me to a bench.

Pete,

if your 405 grain 45-70 bullets are the remington SPs i have had great luck with a 22" H&R using H4198.  The throat has not been reamed so I can only load a little over 2.55" but not much. Getting sub MOA groups @ 100yards, best has been a 3 shot 0.7" grp.  If you want the load data, I can PM you.

I don't want to get off topic here, but the Lee Hand-Press was mentioned, and I think that is a grand ol' idea.

IMO, everybody that handloads needs a hand-press. The simplicity of this little tool is amazing and you can load anywhere, anytime, including while on the range.

My first hand-press was a very nice RCBS. However, someone needed it more than myself so it grew legs and walked off. This was the one with multiple links for leverage and was quite nice, but very expensive for that day and time.
The Lee hand-press is  probably 1/4 the cost and just as good, in every aspect, for the average handloader. Especially if loading straight walled cases like the 45-70. Although I own several presses, that little Lee hand-press is my go to press for everything I load in 45-70.

Russ...
