.375 H&H magnum - any concerns?
« on: February 28, 2010, 09:20:50 AM »
Hello,

I'm wondering if an Encore in this caliber would shoot loose over time or turn out to be hell on scopes and mounts.  Has anyone done a fair bit of shooting with the Encore in this caliber?

Thanks!

This is my current Encore 375 H&H Magnum but I also use to have an Encore rifle barrel chambered for the same cartridge.

Use a Leupold scope and it should be fine.  Use a steel base (not aluminum) base and rings and Lock Tite the base with low or medium strength Lock Tite.  I tried Leupold QD rings with mine and they shot loose.  I'd recommend a Warne base and rings.

The length of pull on an Encore stock is short so you have to be very careful when shooting or the scope will cut you.  The recoil pad on Encore stocks isn't all that cushy and an Encore is fairly light so felt recoil will be significant.  I didn't have a muzzle brake on mine and I think it would have been more enjoyable to shoot if it had had one.  The brake would have given less recoil, less muzzle rise and less tendency toward a scope bite.

The 375 H&H Magnum is a real hammer.  I used my rifle to take 2 Warthogs, a Blesbok, a Zebra, a Blue Wildebeest and an Impala each with one shot.

Thanks!  So the gun itself won't take any punishing that it can't handle?

I'm going to use either a Williams peep sight (dunno what front ramp to install - ?) or a Leupold M8 2.5x compact on the rifle.  Something with near 5" of eye relief so I can set it forward.

A friend of mine had one.  He pulled the trigger one day and the stock broke at what I would call the wrist.  It was a factory ryanite stock.  Left a nasty mark on his shoulder.
