My new chopped and silenced .357!
« on: January 16, 2010, 06:22:45 AM »
Man this thing is fun, I can't believe I didn't build one sooner thatn this!  I had Adco cut the barrel to 16.1" and thread the end for my Gemtech suppressor.

With .38 specials, this thing is quieter than a BB gun!

What do you think of my fancy homemade case??

What does a silencer like that cost, and how hard to get the paper work, and how expensive to own it? That thing could be a hoot in my area.

Dee, if you are into building things, you can build one for less than $20 in parts if you have a brazeing torch. Made from exhaust pipe, stainless mesh wire and freez plugs, look good in the book. I have never tried to build one though. The permit and registration will make it legal.

The book "How to Build Military Grade Suppressors" tells how to do both, build and register the device legallly. I oredred my copy from a big online book supplier.

I always figured you could build one out of pvc pipe and steel wool. Haven't tried it, but I figure it would work.

Id like to say that I am also the proud owner of a YHM 9mm Wraith XL and it IS in fact quieter that a spring loaded bb gun..

I kept my barrel at 22..

BTW, where did you get the case?

ALSO, stay away from the 125's.. they make a slightly different crack than the 158 or 180's.. Very distinguished.

7 coons last night, all grouped up. Didn't know what was happening!

Thanks for the kind words guys!

As far as the suppressor goes, it was about $600.  I got it when Gemtech was doing the promotion where they would pay your $200 transfer fee.  It's my second silencer, I have another one for .22.  THey are definitely cool to play with.

As far as accuracy goes, it seems to be just fine.  Definitely minute of squirrel out to about 75 yards.  I haven't really taken time to do much paper punching with it since it is not a hard core target rig.

The case was just a smaller take-down shotgun case I picked up at the local sporting goods store.  I removed the original foam, and bought some replacement foam and just made the cut outs for everything.  I've done it on a few smaller pistol cases, and it works great for holding everything!

TheBanker,

That is awesome!  A suppressed handi is something on my to-do list, but you don't see many people doing it.  With no bolt movement, I can imagine how quiet it is.

Is that the "Tundra 9mm"?  Does Gemtech warranty 9mm suppressors fired with 357/38 bullets?

My other choice was doing one in a 22.  Since we can't hunt with suppressed weapons in Alabama, it would simply be for silent plinking.

Thanks,
-Kyle

Dee-

You can have a suppressor registered on a form 4 or form 1(build your own). A decent suppressor will cost ya around 500.00 and tax is 200.00. you need to get a CLEO signature but if I understand it correctly you won't have a problem with the LEO signature ;D

The only other issue can be the state that you live in, if they have a specific ban on them.....

I always figured you could build one out of pvc pipe and steel wool. Haven't tried it, but I figure it would work.

You can build one yourself with a form1 and $200.  The PVC and steel wool would work a bit, but once you pay the tax you might as well do a good job.  The tax stamp is only good for the one approved item, so a PVC one wouldn't be replaceable when it cracked (or blew up from the 357 pressure)  I'm not trying to discourage you from  doing it, I'm trying to encourage you to go all out and build something you would be happy with.

Buying is a better way to go for those who may not have the metal working tools.  Think it through (silencertalk.com can help point you in the right direction) decide if you can build it, or if you should buy one.  Buying "Class3" doesn't allow the ATF to enter you home as they please without a warrant (popular urban legend) and you can buy a dozen legally for less than you would pay an attorney as a retainer if you got caught doing one without the paperwork.  I know you (Dee) are a law abiding guy from your posts, so please don't think I think otherwise, but that last point stands making because this is a public place and I want everybody who wants one to know how to get one and stay out of trouble.  This is supposed to be fun.

A good place to start is to go register and post on silencertalk and ask about a good dealer in your area.  That way members can post who you can deal with (and even who you DON'T want to deal with).  A licensed dealer can show you some of the options, help you find a price and pick a caliber, and walk you through the reams of paper work.  It's actually less paper than buying a car, but the approval takes a few months to come through.  Once you have it, it's yours.  No yearly updates, no nothin' but earplug free shooting goodness.

that is a very neat rifle. i would love to have a supressed rifle. :) on another note, ain't it great that the government makes laws agaist silencers, short barreled shotguns, full auto guns, etc. UNLESS you have enough MONEY and time to buy the permits, pay the taxes and jump thru the hoops. ::)

Here's a list of Class 3 Weapons laws by state, I've had the link for several years, so it may not be entirely accurate.

Banker  - you read my mind... I am on that path now as well...

For those that think the $200 tax is bad.... be advised ... it was enacted in 1934 dollars and never adjusted for inflation.... thank God.

Banker,
Nice Rig.  That's my next project.  Maybe with a YHM M2 in 9mm so I can clean out lead residue. I have a Handi in 7.62.39 cut to 16.25" that  "wears" an AAC Cyclone suppressor.  With subsonic handloads it's "click, wait, wait, Thunk."  I'm surprised more folks don't suppress Handi's. Seems like a perfect choice.
Could also form 1 an SB2 receiver as an SBR and fit several barrels to it.  Perfect little "pocket rifle."

There is a class 3 dealer near me that I have bought quite a few guns through, but noting class 3 as of yet. He told me that if you use one of the legal websites online and form a legal trust you can make yourself the trustee of the trust and have the trust purchase the suppressor. If you do it that way the purchase doesn't have to be signed off by the head LEO in your area.

I would want to remind those thinking about undertaking a project such as this, you do have to have your stamp first. It only takes one part, and you are looking at a long time away from home. I do not start building for a customer, untill he has been approved. The wait time for paperwork will run from a month, to six, if you don't  have another Class 3 item already, but you never know till you send it in.
