Ream out a 22 lr or Hornet BBL
« on: February 05, 2010, 01:02:05 PM »
Is it do-able to ream out a 22 Lr or would need to use a Hornet bbl to a 218 Bee?

Thanks

.22 LR is .223" diameter.  .218 Bee normally uses .224" bullets.  The original .22 Hornets had .223" bores, whereas the newer ones all have .224" bores.  I'm not aware of any T/C .22 Hornet barrels that have .223" bores.

All that said, you could do a .218 Bee barrel off of a .22 LR barrel, but you would have to limit yourself to the .223" bullets that are out there for the older .223" Hornet barrels.

And that said, why not just buy a .218 Bee barrel to begin with?

What is the twist of a .22 LR? Is it fast enough for a Bee?

1:16, I think.  Dunno what a standard Bee is.  Don't have a reloading manual handy to consult, either.

I'm not home to check but IIRR the Hornet case is longer than a Bee, so you wouldn't be able to rechamber a Hornet to a Bee.
Ed's Contender shows a 14" blue NIB 218 Bee barrel in stock.

Edit - That's a 14" Bee barrel in my avatar.

You would be correct.  The .22 Hornet is 1.403" long whereas the Bee is 1.345" long.  I'm home and looking at a reloading manual (Hornady 6th Edition) now.  They used a Marlin 1894CL to test their .218 Bee data.  It has a 1:16" twist (to answer that question that was asked earlier).

Hornady makes a 40 gr bullet in 222 dia. made especially for the Jet, that would be the one to use in my opinion.   blqsqurl
